{"id":10068,"date":"2022-01-30T13:26:01","date_gmt":"2022-01-30T13:26:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1379168"},"modified":"2022-01-30T13:26:01","modified_gmt":"2022-01-30T13:26:01","slug":"stop-hyping-batteries-its-pumped-hydro-that-will-save-the-planet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=10068","title":{"rendered":"Stop hyping batteries, it\u2019s pumped hydro that will save the planet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-president-biden-sets-2030-greenhouse-gas-pollution-reduction-target-aimed-at-creating-good-paying-union-jobs-and-securing-u-s-leadership-on-clean-energy-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">half within a decade<\/a>, the Biden administration\u2019s goal, the U.S. is going to need a lot more solar and wind power generation, and lots of cheap energy storage.<\/p>\n<p>Wind and solar power vary over the course of a day, so energy storage is essential to provide a continuous flow of electricity. But today\u2019s batteries are typically quite small and store enough energy for only a few hours of electricity. To rely more on wind and solar power, the U.S. will need more overnight and longer-term storage as well.<\/p>\n<p>While battery innovations<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/secretary-granholm-announces-new-goal-cut-costs-long-duration-energy-storage-90-percent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">get a lot of attention<\/a>, there\u2019s a simple, proven long-term storage technique that\u2019s been used in the U.S. since the 1920s.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s called<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/water\/pumped-storage-hydropower\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pumped hydro energy storage<\/a>. But what many people don\u2019t realize is that most of the best hydro storage sites aren\u2019t on rivers at all.<\/p>\n<p>We created a<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalmap.prod.saas.terria.io\/#share=s-tPEnZ4T5NRAYIiLS0E3ftvcAzb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">world atlas<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>of potential sites for closed-looped pumped hydro \u2013 systems that don\u2019t include a river \u2013 and found 35,000 paired sites in the U.S. with good potential. While many of these sites, which we located by satellite, are in rugged terrain and may be unsuitable for geological, hydrological, economic, environmental or social reasons, we estimate that only a few hundred sites are needed to<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/2516-1083\/abeb5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">support a 100% renewable U.S. electricity system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why wind and solar need long-term storage<\/h2>\n<p>To function properly, power grids must be able to match the incoming electricity supply to electricity demand in real time or they risk shortages or overloads.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/8836526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">There are several techniques<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>that grid managers can use to keep that balance with variable sources like wind and solar. They\u2019re adept at managing the rise of solar power midday when the sun is overhead and releasing it when power demand peaks in the evenings.<\/p>\n<p>Pumped hydro, on the other hand, allows for larger and longer storage than batteries, and that is essential in a wind- and solar-dominated electricity system. It is also cheaper for overnight and longer-term storage.<\/p>\n<h2>Off-river pumped hydro energy storage<\/h2>\n<p>In 2021, the U.S. had<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/prod\/files\/2021\/01\/f82\/us-hydropower-market-report-full-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">43 operating pumped hydro plants<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>with a total generating capacity of<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydro.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/2021-Pumped-Storage-Report-NHA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">about 22 gigawatts<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>and an energy storage capacity of 553 gigawatt-hours. They make up 93% of utility-scale storage in the country. Globally,<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/2516-1083\/abeb5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pumped hydro\u2019s share<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>of energy storage<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sandia.gov\/ess-ssl\/gesdb\/public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">is even higher<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>\u2013 about<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/2516-1083\/abeb5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">99% of energy storage volume<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pump hydro projects<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcn.org\/issues\/54.1\/north-renewable-energy-cultural-resources-are-not-a-renewable-thing-for-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">can be controversial<\/a>,<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/arizona-environment\/2021\/08\/05\/2-little-colorado-river-dam-projects-have-been-withdrawn\/5408667001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">particularly when they involve dams on rivers<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>that flood land to create new reservoirs and can affect ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Creating closed-loop systems that use pairs of existing lakes or reservoirs instead of rivers would avoid the need for new dams. A project planned in Bell County, Kentucky, for example, uses an<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroreview.com\/hydro-industry-news\/rye-development-to-build-lewis-ridge-pumped-storage-project-in-kentucky-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">old coal strip mine<\/a>. The reservoirs can be new or use<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genexpower.com.au\/250mw-kidston-pumped-storage-hydro-project.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">old mining sites<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>or<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snowyhydro.com.au\/snowy-20\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">existing lakes or reservoirs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On sunny or windy days, water is pumped to the upper reservoir. At night, the water flows back down through the turbines to recover the stored energy.<\/p>\n<p>A pair of 250-acre reservoirs with an altitude difference of 600 meters (1,969 feet) and 20-meter depth (65 feet) can store 24 gigawatt-hours of energy, meaning the system could supply 1 gigawatt of power for 24 hours,<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/2516-1083\/abeb5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">enough for a city of a million people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" srcdoc=\"\n\n<style>*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}<\/style>\n<p><a href='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dvLBE0HcitQ?feature=oembed&amp;autoplay=1&amp;mute=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;iv_load_policy=3&amp;theme=light&amp;playsinline=1'><img src='https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/dvLBE0HcitQ\/hqdefault.jpg'><img src='https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/themes\/cyberdelia\/assets\/img\/ytplaybtn.png' style='top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)'><img src='https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/themes\/cyberdelia\/assets\/img\/ytplaybtn-hover.png' style='top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;opacity:0;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)'><\/a>&#8221; width=&#8221;560&#8243; height=&#8221;315&#8243; frameborder=&#8221;0&#8243; allowfullscreen=&#8221;allowfullscreen&#8221;>[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The water can cycle between upper and lower reservoirs for a hundred years or more.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2010WR009889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Evaporation suppressors<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>\u2013 small objects floating on the water to trap humid air \u2013 can help reduce water evaporation. In all, the amount of water needed to support a 100% renewable electricity system is about<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/2516-1083\/abeb5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">3 liters per person per day<\/a>, equivalent to 20 seconds of a morning shower. This is<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1021\/acs.est.8b00139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">one-tenth<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>of the water evaporated per person per day in the cooling systems of U.S. fossil fuel power stations.<\/p>\n<h2>Storage to support 100% renewables<\/h2>\n<p>Little pumped storage has been built in the U.S. in recent years because there hasn\u2019t been much need, but that\u2019s changing.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, about<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.powerengineeringint.com\/renewables\/renewable-energy-account-for-78-of-us-capacity-additions-in-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">three-quarters<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>of all new power capacity built was either solar photovoltaics or wind power. Their costs have been falling, making them<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lazard.com\/perspective\/levelized-cost-of-energy-levelized-cost-of-storage-and-levelized-cost-of-hydrogen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">cheaper to build in many areas<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>than fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Australia is<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/wprwd9p3mjrm6z8\/RE%20update.docx?dl=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">installing solar and wind<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>three times faster per capita than the U.S. and is already facing the need for<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/About_Parliament\/Parliamentary_Departments\/Parliamentary_Library\/pubs\/rp\/rp2021\/AustralianElectricityOptionsPumpedHydro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">mass storage<\/a>. It has<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snowyhydro.com.au\/snowy-20\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">two systems<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genexpower.com.au\/250mw-kidston-pumped-storage-hydro-project.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">under construction<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>that are designed to have more energy storage than all the utility batteries in the world put together; another dozen are under serious consideration. None involve new dams on rivers. The annual operating cost is low, and the working fluid is water rather than battery chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>Shifting electricity to renewable energy and then electrifying vehicles and heating can eliminate most human-caused greenhouse gas emissions.
