{"id":10128,"date":"2022-02-04T15:08:57","date_gmt":"2022-02-04T15:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1379521"},"modified":"2022-02-04T15:08:57","modified_gmt":"2022-02-04T15:08:57","slug":"teslas-rolling-stop-feature-mimicked-dumb-humans-and-got-54k-evs-recalled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=10128","title":{"rendered":"Tesla\u2019s \u2018rolling stop\u2019 feature mimicked dumb humans \u2014 and got 54K EVs recalled"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/shift?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2022%2F02%2Fheader-tesla-rolling-stop-feature.jpg&amp;signature=6a9ca2aa733eee31eef9245cc8577502\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span>Tesla is recalling nearly 54,000 vehicles in the US, as a recent Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta update allows its cars to perform a \u201crolling stop.\u201d This means the vehicle <span>doesn\u2019t come to a complete halt at a stop sign<\/span>, instead moving slowly through it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Unsurprisingly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/static.nhtsa.gov\/odi\/rcl\/2022\/RCLRPT-22V037-4462.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">safety recall<\/a> of the feature, which it deemed dangerous:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"5\">\n<p class=\"p1\">Failing to stop at a stop sign can increase the risk of a crash.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thanks for that, NHTSA.<\/p>\n<h3>The background:<\/h3>\n<p><span>According to the NHTSA, Tesla introduced the rolling stop functionality<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tesla_raj\/status\/1452152897798426625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>last October<\/span><\/a><span> through a \u201climited access\u201d over-the-air update.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As part of this, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/tesla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tesla<\/a> owners could choose between different profiles for their car\u2019s self-driving features: Chill, Average, and Assertive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Assertive mode was accompanied with a warning that the vehicle \u201cmay perform rolling stops.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"5.4769230769231\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I guess \u201cRoad Rage Mode\u201d didn\u2019t fit on the screen <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6pJNFvrJXA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/6pJNFvrJXA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 David Zipper (@DavidZipper) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidZipper\/status\/1480218411162550273?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">January 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The NHTSA\u2019s report specifies the rolling stop feature \u201callows the vehicle to travel through all-way-stop intersections at up to 5.6 mph before coming to a complete stop\u201d \u2014 if certain conditions are met first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The most important are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>No vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists are detected near the intersection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The vehicle has sufficient visibility when approaching the intersection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What does this mean for Tesla?<\/h3>\n<p><span>The EV maker has decided to voluntarily (not that there was any other option) recall a number of 2016-2022 Model S and Model X, 2017-2022 Model 3, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles \u2014 all of which allow the feature.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It will also launch an over-the-air software update that disables the rolling stop functionality. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Musk\u2019s snark and\u2026 contradiction<\/h3>\n<p>Naturally, Elon rushed to defend Tesla\u2019s software and \u2014 why the hell not? There are many who pose as the latter while behaving like the former. No integrity.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, there were no safety issues. The car simply slowed to ~2 mph &amp; continued forward if clear view with no cars or pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1488615123946246151?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">February 1, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Indeed, Tesla notified the NHTSA that, as of January 27, 2022, it\u2019s not aware of \u201cany warranty claims, field reports, crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this condition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But Musk\u2019s nonchalant justification of the software raises deeper concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EMA6myXpfqI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Tesla\u2019s Q4 2021 earnings call<\/span><\/a><span>, the celebrity CEO predicted that FSD will be safer than human drivers by the end of 2022:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"6\">\n<p><span>I would be shocked if we do not achieve Full Self-Driving safer than a human this year. I would be shocked.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>But programming an autonomous software to take the same kinds of shortcuts a human driver does undermines the whole \u201cautonomous cars will be safer\u201d argument.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Especially since we\u2019re still unsure autonomous systems are able to make the judgements a human driver can when it comes to rule bending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And there\u2019s another issue here: it looks like the feature was <\/span><i><span>designed<\/span><\/i><span> to break laws. Because, you guessed it, performing a rolling stop in the US is, well, illegal. And it\u2019d get you a nice fat ticket.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So why would Tesla enable a feature that\u2019s technically illegal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Was it a programming oversight?
