And if drivers use them with a false sense of security, the results could be devastating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ariel Wolf, the general counsel for AVIA, points out that if a consumer gets in a vehicle with driver-assist features but is under the false impression that the car is \u201cself-driving\u201d or will \u201cdrive itself,\u201d that can lead to misuse of the technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We\u2019ve seen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/against-tesla-transport-authorities-a-toothless-tiger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>plenty of examples of that<\/span><\/a><span> with people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tesla-fsd-back-seat-driving-stunt-arrested-buys-new-car-2021-5?op=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>driving in the back of their Teslas<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/of-course-someone-shot-a-porn-video-in-a-tesla-driving-1834638212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>making porn movies<\/span><\/a><span>, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepline.com\/tesla-drivers-sleeping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>sleeping<\/span><\/a><span> in their Teslas.<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" srcdoc=\"\n\n<style>*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}<\/style>\n<p><a href='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PDNGATpyr9k?feature=oembed&amp;autoplay=1&amp;mute=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;iv_load_policy=3&amp;theme=light&amp;playsinline=1'><img src='https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/PDNGATpyr9k\/hqdefault.jpg'><img src='https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/themes\/cyberdelia\/assets\/img\/ytplaybtn.png' style='top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)'><img src='https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/themes\/cyberdelia\/assets\/img\/ytplaybtn-hover.png' style='top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;opacity:0;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)'><\/a>&#8221; width=&#8221;560&#8243; height=&#8221;315&#8243; frameborder=&#8221;0&#8243; allowfullscreen=&#8221;allowfullscreen&#8221;>[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span>Wolf asserts that this also hurts the advancement and reputation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/toyotas-e-palette-is-suspended-from-tokyo-paralympics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>vehicle automation<\/span><\/a><span> technology. Especially if journalists mislead consumers to believe that incidences of driver-assist misuse involve a car that was \u201cself-driving.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If we go back to Manjoo\u2019s article, the author refers to driving assistance as&nbsp; \u201cself-driving systems,\u201d noting that some require the person in the driver\u2019s seat to hold the wheel while Super Cruise dispenses with the wheel touching.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is misleading, as it suggests the car is driving by itself and is in control. Both Tesla\u2019s FSD and Super Cruise require the driver to be fully aware and responsible for controlling the car, whether their hands are on the wheel or not. They need to fully pay attention and be able to take over the car in a split second without warning. Instead, they use the term fully autonomous driving technology.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company explained that \u201csome automakers use the term \u2018self-driving\u2019 inaccurately, giving consumers and the general public a false impression of the capabilities of driver-assist (not fully autonomous) technology.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ok, they haven\u2019t explicitly mentioned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/teslas-app-outage-exposes-the-bigger-problem-of-iot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Tesla<\/span><\/a><span>, but I think we can all take an accurate guess who they are talking about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They stress that this is more than just a branding or linguistic exercise in that a false impression of advanced driver assistance could lead someone to unknowingly take risks (like taking their hands off the steering wheel), jeopardizing not only their own safety but the safety of people around them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The public perception of vehicle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/whos-to-blame-for-self-driving-vehicle-accidents-uk-law-commission-says-automakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>functionality and safety<\/span><\/a><span> matters.
