Google released the first developer preview of Android 13<\/a> last night. This early build has some interesting new features like Material You theming<\/a> for all apps, but thanks to Android sleuth Mishaal Rahman<\/a>, I found one in here that I\u2019ve wanted for years: runtime notification permissions.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s basically an easily overlooked, but essential component of how notifications work \u2014 and I hope I can get you just as excited as I am about this feature by the time you\u2019re done reading this.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s runtime notification permission?<\/h2>\n

In simple words, apps in Android<\/a> 13 will ask for your permission to send you push notifications when they\u2019re first launched \u2014 as opposed to you changing those settings after you\u2019ve been annoyed by one too many unwanted alerts.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time we\u2019ve heard about it. In January, Android Police<\/a> posted a screenshot of what the popup screen for this permission looks like.<\/p>\n
