{"id":10222,"date":"2022-02-11T14:20:29","date_gmt":"2022-02-11T14:20:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1380305"},"modified":"2022-02-11T14:20:29","modified_gmt":"2022-02-11T14:20:29","slug":"the-autonomous-black-hawk-helicopter-is-a-terrifying-glimpse-into-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=10222","title":{"rendered":"The autonomous Black Hawk helicopter is a terrifying glimpse into the future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>This past Saturday and Monday, a UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter took flight <\/span><span>for the first time without anyone on board.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Each time, the helicopter successfully completed 30 minutes of <a href=\"http:\/\/thenexteweb.com\/topic\/autonomous\/vehicle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">autonomous<\/a> flight, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2022-02-08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a> from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Image: DARPA<\/figcaption><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1380308\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/02\/black-hawk-helicopter-619.jpeg\" alt=\"Black Hawk autonomous flight\" width=\"619\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/02\/black-hawk-helicopter-619.jpeg 619w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/02\/black-hawk-helicopter-619-280x143.jpeg 280w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/02\/black-hawk-helicopter-619-264x135.jpeg 264w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/02\/black-hawk-helicopter-619-529x270.jpeg 529w\"><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<p><span>These test flights are part of DARPA\u2019s Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) program, which aims to put \u201cremovable kits\u201d into existing military aircrafts to \u201cpromote the addition of high-level automation.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Impressive, but hella ominous.<\/p>\n<p>Let me explain.<\/p>\n<p><span>According to Stuart Young, <\/span><span>program manager at DARPA, \u201c<\/span><span>with ALIAS, the Army will have much more operational flexibility.\u201d As he explains, this includes \u201cthe ability to operate aircraft at all times of the day or night, with and without pilots, and in a variety of difficult conditions, such as degraded visual environments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This actually sounds like a good thing, right? Such tech can make aircraft smarter and safer for human pilots. So where\u2019s the terrifying part?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a second advantage, Young mentioned that the reduced workload allows pilots to shift their focus from the mechanics of flying to \u201cmission management.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And while the word \u201cmission\u201d isn\u2019t expanded upon, it\u2019s not too hard to guess what he\u2019s referring to. Black Hawk helicopters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/products\/sikorsky-black-hawk-helicopter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">serve a variety of purposes<\/a>: reconnaissance, evacuation, special ops, search and rescue, and\u2026 combat assault.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For example, they can be fitted with firing guns, rockets, and missiles.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Taking the pilot out of the equation means that autonomous Black Hawks can have an extra military edge: more crew for armed missions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And let\u2019s take it one step further, because it\u2019s a gloomy day here in Amsterdam and I feel like contemplating where humanity is going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Call me a doomsayer, but I believe that the next level of military aircraft automation will be completely autonomous helicopter killbots. And with our technological progress, a scenario in which countries make airborne robots fight their wars isn\u2019t unimaginable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yes, robots destroying each other is much better than human armies killing each other. But who\u2019s to say that autonomous killer aircraft won\u2019t launch attacks in cities <em>against<\/em> civilians? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And what about the ethical implications? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I personally hope we won\u2019t reach a future where Skynet-style Hunter-Killer autonomous aircraft will become the norm. <span>I\u2019m more interested in traveling around the country in my car, while safely watching a movie with a tasty cocktail.
