Commutes will be unrecognizable, cities will change, and industries reshaped.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We\u2019re still a long way away from that \u2014 but companies are edging ever closer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are prime examples, both approaching the challenge in very different ways. The first is Tesla, with its&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/whats-the-difference-between-driver-assist-and-autonomous-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/whats-the-difference-between-driver-assist-and-autonomous-vehicles\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">beta-testing of Level 2 driver-assist tech<\/a><span>&nbsp;that aims to progress to full vehicle automation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>The second is a group of companies involved in the development and deployment of autonomous robotaxis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But how do they compare? And how do we get from here to a fully autonomous future?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If we look beyond the tech alone, two significant measures of success come to mind: partnerships and capacity for scale. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>By partnerships, I mean industry collaborations that advance not only the number of vehicles, but the tech, as well as its accessibility to users. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Scale is also critical. So, if Tesla can successfully develop autonomous tech, they win the battle on private car ownership alone.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s a big \u201cif\u201d though, especially considering they\u2019re only testing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sae.org\/news\/2021\/06\/sae-revises-levels-of-driving-automation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Level 2<\/a> vehicle automation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>So, could Tesla even get from cars to robotaxis?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Currently, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/tesla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tesla<\/a>\u2019s driver-assist cannot be deployed without an initial <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/support\/safety-score\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>safety score<\/span><\/a><span> determined by monitoring user behavior over some time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>If the company\u2019s goal is to go from driver-assist FSD to robotaxi, a lot needs to go right. Plus, there has to be a technological improvement \u2014 much of which current robotaxi makers are already deploying.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The reality is that no one knows how easy it will be to switch <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/the-auto-sector-thinks-teslas-full-of-shit-with-its-full-self-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tesla FSD beta testers<\/a> into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sae.org\/blog\/sae-j3016-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Level 3 and 4 autonomation<\/span><\/a><span>, let alone full automation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last year Musk announced that the number of American FSD Beta vehicles went from a couple of thousand in Q3, to nearly 60,000 by the end of Q4 \u2014 a massive leap in anyone\u2019s book.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>By comparison, if we look at China, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/instablog\/52642539-carsong\/5574311-case-for-tesla-s-full-self-driving-fsd-subscription-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>adoption of FSD<\/span><\/a><span> is surprisingly low. It sits at 1% to 2%, compared to an adoption of 20% to 25% in the US and Europe.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tesla\u2019s business model is deploying owners to test their software as it evolves, so they can iron out the bugs.&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But these low adoption rates suggest there are a lot of people who don\u2019t want to drive their car with driver-assist, let alone full automation. This makes it difficult to advance their driving tech in the real world. Especially when we compare it to the heavy lifting already done by companies like Argo, Cruise, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/waymo-one-trusted-tester-launches-but-consumers-still-fearful-of-avs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Waymo<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>But Tesla\u2019s gaining partners <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Prior to the challenges of getting enough beta testers, Elon Musk predicted that Tesla will have their own robotaxis on the road by 2023.&nbsp; Can it succeed?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"6.9230769230769\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">How long for the first robotaxi release\/ deployment? 2023?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Pranay Pathole (@PPathole) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPathole\/status\/1249209968877862919?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">April 12, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>In 2021, the company sold over 100,000 Model 3 cars to Hertz. And in October of the same year, Hertz and Uber also&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.hertz.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/hertz-partners-uber-add-50000-teslas-uber-network-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/newsroom.hertz.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/hertz-partners-uber-add-50000-teslas-uber-network-2023\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">announced<\/a><span> a partnership to make up to 50,000 Teslas available by 2023 for Uber drivers to rent.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>But does this translate to 100,000 robotaxis in the making? Hardly! How easy will it be to get all states on board?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Currently, autonomous taxis only operate on pre-mapped streets. By comparison, Tesla FSD drivers can go anywhere.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We have no way to know if autonomous robotaxis will have mapped the whole of the US before Teslas are operating without human drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Who\u2019s in the best position?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>If I was to place a bet, I think we\u2019ll see more Teslas on the road than robotaxis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> But here\u2019s the kicker: the Teslas won\u2019t be autonomous. <\/span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>Maybe they\u2019ll progress from Level 2, but I can\u2019t see them going from Level 2 to 5 without a lot of challenges \u2014 especially in safety and regulatory approval.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So there we are. The robotaxi industry and Tesla have significant challenges scaling and evolving their tech.
