EVs don\u2019t have a gearbox. They\u2019re automatic. These motors<\/span><span> deliver power instantly, meaning the process of building up torque through revving \u2014 as in internal combustion engines \u2014 is unnecessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Plus, EV motors have a much larger RPM range than their ICE peers.<\/span> They can hit up to 20,000rpm, compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kia.com\/dm\/discover-kia\/ask\/do-electric-cars-have-transmissions.html#:~:text=Electric%20cars%20don't%20require,electric%20car%2C%20an%20electric%20motor.&amp;text=Electric%20motors%20deliver%20power%20instantly,internal%20combustion%20engines%20is%20unnecessary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the 6,000rpm limit<\/a> of most conventional cars.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Basically, EV engineers only need to design a one-ratio, single-speed transmission that effectively regulates the electric motor \u2014 and delivers the best balance between acceleration and top speed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Are there any multi-speed EVS out there?<\/h3>\n<p><span>Single-speed is definitely the norm, but we do have two exceptions: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.porsche.com\/international\/models\/taycan\/taycan-models\/taycan-turbo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Porsche Taycan<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audi-mediacenter.com\/en\/audi-e-tron-gt-13716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Audi e-tron GT<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They both feature a two-speed automatic gearbox to maximize acceleration and optimize efficiency at higher speeds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Does this mean we\u2019re possibly looking at a two-speed future for EVs in general? No, I wouldn\u2019t say so.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>From a manufacturing point of view, a single-gear system reduces cost and complexity. This helps automakers save up some extra money and, in turn, keep EVs affordable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While there are some performance benefits to things like the Taycan (from $82,700) and e-tron GT ($140,000), they\u2019re far too pricey for the average consumer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And there you have it.
