Earlier this month, a German man even broke his neck <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/neoscope\/vr-injuries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">playing a VR game<\/a>, and while a heavy headset wasn\u2019t directly blamed, that sort of weight on one\u2019s noggin likely was at fault in his injury.<\/p>\n<p>Motorola has a new solution to take some weight off your head: the company has developed a 5G smartphone that you could wear around your neck, which will host all the processing hardware needed to power an <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/augmented-reality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">XR<\/a> headset.<\/p>\n<p>This is a departure from how we\u2019ve connected XR headsets with power units so far. Either we\u2019ve tethered them to powerful PCs, created funny-looking solutions like <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/hps-revamped-vr-backpack-delivers-the-closest-thing-to-1835010729\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a backpack<\/a>, or more recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/lenovos-sleek-new-ar-glasses-project-5-virtual-monitors-at-once\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">used USB cables to connect them to smartphones<\/a>. The new solution aims to <span>remove all the mobility and connectivity we faced with these older options.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img has worked on this solution for a year along with Verizon as its connectivity partner.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how this works: thick wires emanate from the phone-sized device and attach magnetically around your neck, and you can use the red barrel-shaped connector to plug in your XR headset.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, it\u2019s compatible with Qualcomm\u2019s Snapdragon VR platform and Microsoft\u2019s Remote Network Driver Interface (RNDIS), which helps <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/hololens\/hololens-cellular\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">HoloLens-like neckband.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s talk about the \u2018phone\u2019 that dangles from your neck. It has a touchpad, and a SIM card slot to connect to 5G. The antennas that connect to the network are housed all along the neckband.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear if the device has any screen. We\u2019ve asked Lenovo to clarify, and we\u2019ll update the story if we hear back.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, there are sensors like a gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer, and GPS to capture different kinds of data.<\/p>\n<p>To power all this, there\u2019s the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, and a 5,000mAh battery. There\u2019s a module at the back of the neckband that has stereo loudspeakers for calls.<\/p>\n<p>Verizon\u2019s Vice president of technology, Brian Mecum told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Engadget<\/a> that it\u2019s already in talks with partners in the retail and education space:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>We took a smartphone and exploded it around your neck. So it\u2019ll be a while before we learn just how effective it is at enabling VR experiences with its compact form factor.
