COVID-19 isn\u2019t the first global pandemic, but it is the first <\/span>of the algorithmic<\/a> age<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This has created both opportunities and threats. While evangelists argue that tech is curbing the virus, critics are concerned that it\u2019s supercharging surveillance<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edward Snowden raised the alarm about the drawbacks in March 2020 \u2014 days after the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

The whistleblower warned that the systems being launched would be hard to remove once the pandemic receded.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we see emergency measures passed, particularly today, they tend to be sticky,\u201d he said<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe emergency tends to be expanded. Then the authorities become comfortable with some new power. They start to like it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Snowden spoke amid a rapid rollout of an array of invasive tools and rules, from <\/span>biosurveillance<\/span><\/a> systems to <\/span>drone monitoring<\/span><\/a>. Amnesty International <\/span>said<\/span><\/a> that human rights restrictions were spreading almost as quickly as the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n

These ostensibly brief intrusions can quickly be extended. The USA Patriot Act, for instance, granted many powers on a temporary basis that later <\/span>became permanent<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Snowden suspected that history would soon be repeated. Two years later, his prediction has proven prescient.<\/span><\/p>\n

Governments are now seeking to <\/span>make emergency powers permanent<\/span><\/a> and integrating their new tools into <\/span>broader surveillance systems<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The tech they introduced to tackle COVID-19 is also being turned to other targets \u2014 a phenomenon known as \u201cfunction creep.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Police, for example, are using contact tracing data for unrelated investigations<\/a>, while \u201cfake news\u201d laws are being exploited to arrest government critics<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

This may only be the start. <\/span>Marcel Fafchamps, a senior fellow at the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, expects<\/a> the erosion of freedoms to increase:<\/span><\/p>\n

These tools will be used by totalitarian regimes to control their population better\u2026 COVID-19 has justified the loss of the last bit of privacy we had left, namely, our health data<\/a> and who we meet in the park.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Politicians appear to have heeded the advice of Winston Churchill: \u201cNever let a good crisis go to waste.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, this may be to the detriment of our rights and liberties.<\/span><\/p>\n
