You could drive anywhere, roaming the glove, traveling to remote locations without a worry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Well, stop dreaming. They exist. And they\u2019re called airless tires. It\u2019s a simple solution: if there\u2019s no air in the tires, they can\u2019t pop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Amazing, right?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Well, you\u2019ll need to curb your enthusiasm a little. Their durability reduces the possibility of them prematurely ending up at a landfill \u2014 as is often the case with punctured air tires.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On top of this, the reduced use of raw materials for replacement tires or for spare tire production can provide significant environmental savings.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>So what\u2019s the catch?<\/h3>\n<p><span>Well, there are a few.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While you won\u2019t have to worry about a flat tire, don\u2019t assume non-pneumatic tires are indestructible. <\/span><span>Without air, the heat created from road friction cannot be dissipated, meaning increased chances of overheating, damage, or failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Compared to normal tires, airless tires also have a larger contact patch with the road surface, which increases rolling resistance. This leads to more drag on the vehicle and higher fuel consumption.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What\u2019s more, the stiffness of airless tires transmits more road irregularities into the suspension, which in turn sends vibrations to vehicle occupants. So you\u2019d need to prepare for a bumpy and even uncomfortable ride.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finally, they\u2019re expected to come with a higher price tag. Goodyear and Michelin haven\u2019t disclosed any market prices yet, but given that the tech is still nascent, I imagine it won\u2019t come cheap, at least in the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What can we expect in the future?<\/h3>\n<p><span>There are plenty of challenges standing in the way of mainstream NPT adoption, and the two companies\u2019 airless tires are still in prototyping and testing stages.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Goodyear plans to have them ready by <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.goodyear.com\/us\/en\/media\/news\/goodyear-airless-tire-first-on-autonomous-shuttles.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">2030<\/a>, and Michelin by <a href=\"https:\/\/michelinmedia.com\/michelin-uptis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">2024<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I have no doubt that NPTs will catch on at some point, but the performance and price needs to be comparable to that of regular tires \u2014 and it seems we\u2019re still a long way off from that reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/why-your-car-isnt-rolling-on-airless-tires\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wouldn\u2019t it be great if you never had to worry about a flat tire?
