We don\u2019t know that much about the car yet. Any car can look good with a few sexy neon lights and a dark backdrop. In 2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.media.renaultgroup.com\/assets\/groupe-renault-introduces-hydrogen-into-its-light-commercial-vehicles-range-5b2a-989c5.html?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>the company announced plans<\/span><\/a><span> to add hydrogen to two of its light electric commercial vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Just a refresher: FCEVs operate with a fuel cell, which combines hydrogen from its tanks with oxygen from the air <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to produce electricity<\/a> (to power an electric motor). The Renault KANGOO ZE Hydrogen and Renault MASTER Z.E. Hydrogen use hydrogen for extended range, not as the sole source of battery power.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the company, the hydrogen fuel cell provides additional energy for up to three times more range than 100% electric vehicles, with a charging time of only five to ten minutes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Its target market is specifically business fleets, especially those already in possession of a <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/hyundai-is-not-ending-its-mission-to-make-hydrogen-fuel-cells-a-thing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hydrogen fueling<\/a> station or those who drive a regular route which includes access to a suitable refill station.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Can hydrogen fuel cells catch up to EV innovation?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Last year, Jos\u00e9 Mu\u00f1oz, chief operating officer for Hyundai, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/hyundai-to-introduce-hydrogen-fuel-cell-systems-to-all-commercial-vehicles-by-2028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>commented<\/span><\/a><span> that hydrogen technology is about where battery vehicles were in the early 2010s.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company predicts that its fuel cells will reach cost parity with electric vehicle batteries by 2030. Geez, that\u2019s a lot of catching up to do.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite that, Hyundai aims to become the first automaker to apply fuel cell systems to all commercial vehicle models by 2028.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One of the biggest barriers to commercializing hydrogen has been the lack of sustainable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/green-steel-is-the-next-big-thing-in-materials-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>green steel<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/are-hydrogen-fuel-cells-the-future-of-green-transport-sorta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>green hydrogen<\/span><\/a><span>. For reference, all of France has less than 20 public charging stations in operation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>By comparison, there are over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.electromaps.com\/en\/charging-stations\/france\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>30,000 EV charging stations<\/span><\/a><span> across the country. It makes the idea of extended range seem rather irrelevant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And what\u2019s more, you can\u2019t refuel a hydrogen car at home at night.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>But France is investing big&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Fortunately, Renault is putting even more effort behind its hydrogen-powered ambitions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2021, the company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyvia.eu\/app\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CP-EN-3-06-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> a partnership with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugpower.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Plug Power<\/span><\/a><span> on an enterprise called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyvia.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>HYVIA<\/span><\/a><span>. It focuses on vehicle R&amp;D and refueling stations. Plug Power has deployed over 40,000 fuel cell systems and designed and built 110 refueling stations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After less than six months of existence, the HYVIA has unveiled three <\/span><span>hydrogen light commercial vehicles: a van, a chassis Cab, and a city bus. The vehicles will be available in 2022 with green hydrogen production and distribution solutions. I<\/span><span>t\u2019s a great start.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And, for broader context, France has been betting big on hydrogen since launching <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climate-laws.org\/geographies\/france\/policies\/hydrogen-deployment-plan-for-the-energy-transition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>a national plan<\/span><\/a><span> in June 2018. It aims to have 400 to 1,000 hydrogen stations by 2028.
