{"id":10353,"date":"2022-02-23T16:21:12","date_gmt":"2022-02-23T16:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1381146"},"modified":"2022-02-23T16:21:12","modified_gmt":"2022-02-23T16:21:12","slug":"meta-expands-reels-globally-in-an-attempt-to-cure-facebooks-woes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=10353","title":{"rendered":"Meta expands Reels globally in an attempt to cure Facebook\u2019s woes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Meta has launched <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/Facebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a> Reels, its short video product for the blue app, across 150 countries.<\/p>\n<p>This is likely a bid to restore its plummeting user base, and restore some ad revenue.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing some success with Instagram Reels, the company began testing its short video platform <a href=\"https:\/\/tech.hindustantimes.com\/tech\/news\/facebook-reels-launched-in-india-to-also-feature-recommended-reels-from-instagram-71615216363669.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">within the Facebook app in India last March<\/a>. Later in September, it launched <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/digital\/news\/facebook-reels-launch-tiktok-1235076168\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">this feature in the US<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But is this global launch of Reels enough to right its sinking ship?<\/p>\n<h2>Stonks<\/h2>\n<p>The social media giant has had a horrid past few weeks. Its daily active user count <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/numbers-behind-meta-stock-market-crash-facebook-metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dipped for the first time in history<\/a>. For context, its market cap was at $921 billion on December 31, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>This has led to Meta slipping out of the top 10 most valuable companies in the world. That\u2019s not too encouraging.<\/p>\n<p>During its Q4 2021 earnings call, Zuck &amp; co. said it will <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/numbers-behind-meta-stock-market-crash-facebook-metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lose more than $10 billion in ad revenue<\/a> \u2014 largely due to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/whats-apples-new-app-tracking-transparency-and-why-is-facebook-against-syndication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple\u2019s privacy-focused changes around ad tracking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Metaverse won\u2019t be a money-maker any time soon<\/h2>\n<p>Last year, Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/facebook-new-name-is-meta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">renamed itself Meta<\/a> \u2014 recently, even urging employees to consider each other <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/metas-new-values-arent-impressing-branding-experts-or-metaverse-veterans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Metamates<\/a> \u2014 to focus on virtual worlds and experiences.<\/p>\n<p>To do all this, the company set aside a massive development budget. As a result, Reality Labs, its division creating its metaverse, reported a loss of over $10 billion last quarter.<\/p>\n<p>During its most recentearnings call, Zuckerberg said that building this dreamy world would be expensive \u2014 and it\u2019d be a few years before it was profitable. The future isn\u2019t here yet.<\/p>\n<h2>Is Facebook Reels the remedy to what\u2019s ailing Meta?<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that TikTok has been eating Meta\u2019s lunch and then some. The short video platform is <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/12\/20\/tiktok-to-rank-as-the-third-largest-social-network-2022-forecast-notes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the world\u2019s third-largest social network<\/a>, despite being <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/india-bans-59-chinese-apps-including-tiktok-and-helo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">banned in India<\/a>, losing a massive chunk of users along the way.<\/p>\n<p>But as Hank Green, one of the creators of popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/vlogbrothers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">YouTube channel VlogBrothers<\/a> noted, TikTok\u2019s rapid growth could eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.protocol.com\/bulletins\/tiktok-creators-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">lead to creators making less money<\/a>. The company has the advantage of providing them with more effective tools to generate a stable revenue stream of money than TikTok.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a call with investors, Zuckerberg mentioned that Reels is one of the prime focus areas for the company this year and is its \u201cfastest-growing content format so far\u201d. He indicated that you might see more short video stuff in the News Feed \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediatoday.com\/news\/facebook-renames-news-feed-to-just-feed-to-avoid-potential-confusion\/618903\/#:~:text=Today%2C%20Facebook%20has%20announced%20that,in%20order%20to%20simplify%20branding.&amp;text=Primarily%2C%20Facebook%20is%20making%20the,was%20apparently%20confusing%20for%20some.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">now renamed just \u201cFeed\u201d<\/a> \u2014 and other areas of the app.<\/p>\n<p>The company said that adverts in Reels are currently bringing in less revenue than those in Feeds or Stories, but it expects improvements over time. While the firm might hope to regain lost users following the format\u2019s introduction, Navarra feels that its issues with an aging demographic \u2014 as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/01\/business\/media\/facebook-boycott.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">certain advertisers boycotting the platform<\/a> \u2014 will still be roadblocks in overall growth.<\/p>\n<p>Itai Elizur, COO at <a href=\"https:\/\/marketacross.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">MarketAcross<\/a>, a marketing firm based out of Israel, agrees that the company\u2019s main aim is to restore user growth:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p>Meta has a long history of doing \u2018clones\u2019 or copies of key features in competing platforms. The main objective [of this Reels expansion] is hindering the growth of other platforms, and not so much gaining direct ad revenue.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Facebook seems set on squeezing money from Reels though. The company has started testing new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/creators\/overlay-ads-for-facebook-reels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">overlay-styled ads<\/a> in the US, Canada, and Mexico. And times are set to get even harder, especially with Google <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/products\/android\/introducing-privacy-sandbox-android\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">planning to bring a new privacy sandbox for Android<\/a> soon, which might impact the business\u2019 ad revenues.<\/p>\n<p>And it looks like Facebook Reels isn\u2019t the golden bullet Zuck is hoping for.<\/p>\n<p>Elizur noted that with the company\u2019s new approach, advertisers are less in control of where in the entire Facebook ecosystem their ad will appear.
