{"id":10419,"date":"2022-03-01T15:53:42","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T15:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1381595"},"modified":"2022-03-01T15:53:42","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T15:53:42","slug":"these-wild-flying-machines-are-set-to-shake-up-the-vtol-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=10419","title":{"rendered":"These wild flying machines are set to shake up the VTOL world"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>It\u2019s 2022 \u2014 which means we\u2019ve been promised VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/understanding-the-future-of-aircraft-from-flying-cars-to-evtol-and-passenger-drones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for over a decade<\/a> now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But while <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/the-evolution-of-aircraft-flying-taxis-and-autonomous-passenger-drones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pioneer founders<\/a> are incrementally moving towards commercial deployment, there\u2019s a new breed of startups snapping at their heels.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many are in their early stages, but all promise something unique, so I reached out to four of the most interesting companies to find out more.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Oh, and I gave them all a rating along the way. Ultimately though, the Zero will fly horizontally the rest of the time, allowing it to maximize its aerodynamics.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Judging by the video, the saucer shape will limit visibility once the aircraft is horizontal, so the user would presumably be relying on a digital flight path, not their surroundings.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It also requires minimal landing space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the company, the ZEVA Zero will be controlled via joysticks by a licensed pilot, with automation planned in the future. This, combined with its compactness, suggests they have their sights set on the military.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Range:<\/b><span> 80km (50 miles)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Speed:<\/b><span> 257kmph (160 mph)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Funding:<\/b><span> The company<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/zeva\/company_financials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span> raised<\/span><\/a><span> a modest \u20ac285k ($255k) in 2019, but there\u2019s no news of fundraising since.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s the latest?:<\/b><span> A full-sized prototype achieved its first untethered, powered test flight in January.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When can I fly in it?: <\/b><span>No time soon. In fact, it\u2019s currently just CGI and a piece of wood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite this, its creators are aiming to create an aircraft that a person can pilot, or can be operated remotely, either with a passenger or cargo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company calls it \u201can African solution for an African problem.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Its scope is vast, from administering seeds to delivering vaccinations, with the underlying message that sustainable ground-level mobility is a challenge in Africa.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to company engineer Vivek Singh, its innovative wing can generate lift at very low speeds, thus ensuring that the aircraft can land safely, even if the propulsion system fails.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Phractyl calls this \u201cinherent safety,\u201d and believes it is uniquely advantageous, especially as it\u2019s not available in other VTOLs. So we\u2019ll give it a few years to mature, and in the meantime, compensate for it with a highly efficient aerodynamic design.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Verdict: <\/b>\ud83d\ude81\ud83d\ude81\ud83d\ude81<\/p>\n<p><span>It looks like a bird \u2014 what\u2019s cooler than that?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But honestly, this is all we know so far.
