You keep your display settings reasonably calibrated. You optimize your viewing distance for maximum detail perception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Naturally, you also pay for <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/netflix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Netflix<\/a>\u2018s top-tier 4K plan. Life\u2019s too short for 1080p.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One night, it\u2019s too late to turn on your 100-inch TV, so you start up Netflix on your PC, eager to appreciate all 8 million pixels of glorious 4K resolution. Except something seems off. Why can\u2019t you see every pore on Danny LaRusso\u2019s face in <\/span><i><span>Cobra Kai<\/span><\/i><span>?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019m sorry to inform you that you\u2019re not 4K content at all. In fact, it\u2019s very likely your resolution is as low as \u2014 <\/span><i><span>gasp<\/span><\/i><span> \u2014 720p. That\u2019s just not okay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Due to DRM protection, Netflix has some strict protocols devices need to follow in order to show anything above 720p, and there might be other factors limiting your resolution as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here\u2019s what you need to know to get 4K to actually work on your PC.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How to check if you\u2019re watching 4K<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span>If you\u2019re not sure what resolution Netflix is displaying on your system, there\u2019s an easy way to check.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Open Netflix, and type in \u2018test patterns.\u2019 This will take you to a series of video collections named\u2026 Test Patterns. Play any of the videos and on the top right corner, you\u2019ll see the resolution the video is streaming at. Keep in mind it might take a few seconds for the 4K stream to actually load, depending on your connection speed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Some basics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span>It also goes without saying you can only watch 4K content if it\u2019s actually available in 4K. So make sure the shows you\u2019re watching have that 4K label before you fret about burry content. You also need to have your streaming quality set to \u2018Auto\u2019 or \u2018High.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Oh, and you need to be actually paying for the 4K tier, of course, though this guide is also helpful if you want to watch 1080p footage, as in most cases, Netflix will default to 720p on PC.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You need the right hardware<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span>Here\u2019s the hardware you\u2019ll need on <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/windows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>A 60Hz 4K display. It needs to support<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/home-entertainment\/hdcp-2-2-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>HDCP 2.2<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>For integrated graphics, an Intel 7th generation Core or newer CPU, or AMD Ryzen CPU.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>For dedicated graphics, an AMD RX 400 or newer, or an Nvidia GPU which meets<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/nvidia.custhelp.com\/app\/answers\/detail\/a_id\/4583\/~\/4k-uhd-netflix-content-on-nvidia-gpus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>these minimum specs<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>An internet connection of 25 Mbps or faster.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>On Mac, similar display requirements apply, but you\u2019ll also need hardware using the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT208862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <span>Titan T2<\/span><\/a><span> chip or an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT211814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Apple Silicon<\/span><\/a><span> processor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You need the right browser (or app)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span>With the vast majority of browsers, Netflix is limited to 720p.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If you\u2019re on Windows you can only access 4K footage with Microsoft Edge or the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/store\/productId\/9WZDNCRFJ3TJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <span>official Netflix app<\/span><\/a><span> from the Windows Store. Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, and all other browsers are all limited to 720p or less. While some PCs include this by default, others will have to pony up a dollar to access it. It\u2019s available from the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/store\/productId\/9NMZLZ57R3T7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Microsoft Store<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If you\u2019re on Mac, life\u2019s a bit simpler. You just need to be using Safari on macOS 11 Big Sur or later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Once you have everything in order, you should be able to load up Netflix and pick content that\u2019s definitely in 4K; if you\u2019re tired of test patterns, most Netflix Originals should be available in 4K. Hit Ctrl+Shift+Alt+D, check your resolution is correct, and you should be good to go.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Troubleshooting<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span>Unfortunately, sometimes following all the above rules just doesn\u2019t work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are some things to keep in mind that might help:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Make sure you\u2019re using a high-speed HDMI cable \u2014 these generally handle 18 Gbps or more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>If you have multiple monitors, <\/span><i><span>every<\/span><\/i><span> external monitor connected to your PC must meet Netflix\u2019s requirements. Otherwise, you will have to disconnect the ones that don\u2019t.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>If you\u2019re using an HDMI adapter such as a USB-C to HDMI adapter, make sure it actually supports 4K at <\/span><i><span>60<\/span><\/i><span> Hz. Most such dongles will support 4K, but some will only handle up to 30 Hz.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>If you have multiple HDMI devices connected, it might help to try a direct connection to your monitor and disconnect other devices to isolate the issue. HDMI can get messy with multiple devices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>If your monitor supports DisplayPort 1.3 or higher, it may help to try that instead of HDMI; on several devices, I\u2019ve had issues over HDMI but none over DisplayPort.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Make sure you have the latest drivers for both your internal and external GPU.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>If all else fails, it might just be easier to buy a Chromecast or other dongle for watching 4K on your monitor.
