fiction, but NASA\u2019s betting it could work in space.<\/p>\n<p>The agency has funded a <span>flying amphibious <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/robot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">robot<\/a> that mutates into different devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dubbed<\/span>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-designing-shapeshifting-robots-for-saturns-moons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Shapeshifter<\/a>, the system is comprised of smaller units that collectively morph into robotic balls, flight arrays, and torpedo-like swimmers.<\/p>\n<p><span>The proposal envisions the machine globetrotting from Titan\u2019s rugged cliffs to <span>a giant shade in space that blocks the glare from stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The 100-meter starshade <span>would match the position and velocity of a moving telescope. S<\/span>pacecraft travel at such speeds that even tiny paint flecks can cause damage.<\/p>\n<p><span>T<\/span>he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/brane-craft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Brane Craft<\/a> is a wafer-thin attempt to clean up this trash. The device wraps around orbiting debris and then lowers it to burn up in Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>The craft is half the thickness of a human hair and looks like a sheet of paper.
