Hell yeah they are"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>Whenever I mention ebikes to the kind of people who wear a lot of lycra, the most common response is an eye roll. They might not say it, but they equate a motor-assisted bike with \u201ccheating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In other words, it\u2019s not proper exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But if we look at an <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/the-best-ebikes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ebike<\/a> in terms of fitness compared to a regular bike, is it cheating? Can it get you \u2014 and keep \u2014 you fit?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What\u2019s your definition of fitness?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Firstly, fitness means a lot of things to different people. For example, is it:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Resting heart rate?<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Lung capacity?<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Calories burned?<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Stamina?<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Climbing three flights of stairs without feeling like you will die?<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Burning fat?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Can we really say one of the above is more beneficial than the others? Of course not. Fitness by itself is a term fraught with misunderstanding.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The health benefits of an ebike<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/acsm-tj\/Fulltext\/2021\/04150\/Metabolic_and_Cardiovascular_Responses_to_a.5.aspx?context=LatestArticles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>2021 research<\/span><\/a><span> \u200b\u200brevealed that riding an ebike for a 4.8km (3-mile) commute resulted in lower exertion in terms of metabolic and cardiovascular rates when compared with a regular bicycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, this still met the intensity level associated with healthy physical activity recommended by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/physical-activity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">World Health Organization<\/a> and the American College of Sports Medicine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They concluded that such exercise, if performed regularly, would likely lead to the improvement or maintenance of cardiovascular health and caloric balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, in a simulated environment, an <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/swapfiets-shapes-the-green-future-of-bike-subscriptions-and-circular-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ebike<\/a> is a workout \u2014 but not as much as a regular bike.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I spoke to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dj-mazzoni-ms-rd-cdn-cscs-00a33038\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>DJ Mazzoni,<\/span><\/a><span> (MSc, Dietician, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, amongst other qualifications). He asserted that an ebike is great for your heart:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p><span>Cardiovascular training is a basic premise: you increase the work rate to the point that your heart rate is significantly above resting rate, and maintain that rate of work for a specified duration. This is a method where you switch between running and walking, choosing whatever pace works for you, and as much as you can manage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Comparatively, an ebike rider can choose how much or little they rely on the motor as they build fitness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ebikes weigh more which means more health benefits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Joe Johnson, the owner of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/9-to-5-nutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>9 To 5 Nutrition<\/span><\/a><span>, asserts that the weight of ebikes is also worth taking into consideration, noting that a heavier ebike takes more effort to ride, meaning you can still work hard, even with the motor in operation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And don\u2019t forget, there\u2019s also the health benefit of carrying an ebike up and down stairs. This is no mean feat, as <\/span><span>an <a href=\"https:\/\/ebikegeneration.com\/blogs\/news\/how-much-do-e-bikes-weigh-know-the-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ebike can weigh up to 30kg<\/a><\/span> (<span>70lb), <\/span><span>compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclinghacker.com\/how-much-does-a-bike-weigh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">8.2kg (18lb) for a standard bike<\/a><\/span><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>But health is not just about fitness!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/socialdeterminants\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>health\u2019s social determinants, which<\/span><\/a><span> looks at health in a broader context of your socio-economic status, environment, and community connections.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to Chris Emery, Senior Director of Communications at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scripps.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Scripps Research Institute<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><span>a medical research facility, that focuses on research and education in biomedical science, <\/span><span>an ebike means you can ride with a wide range of people, ride on days when you might otherwise feel too tired, and ride when you\u2019re recovering from an injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He explained that a knee problem meant he couldn\u2019t keep up with his cycling buddies, noting that riding for him is \u201ca social activity, as well as a physical one,\u201d going on to stress its importance for his mental health.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then we have to consider <\/span><i><span>where<\/span><\/i><span> we\u2019re cycling. And older people are already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/south-korea-will-use-vr-determine-if-elderly-can-keep-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>less likely to drive cars for safety reasons<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An ebike can keep people exercising and can extend someone\u2019s cycling life, especially if they transition to etrikes and other more ergonomic designs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So there you have it. If you are transitioning from a bike to an ebike, sure, you\u2019ll find it easier. But for people looking to start a fitness journey, maintain their fitness, or exercise despite injury or advanced years, ebikes are a great option.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Getting people out in the fresh air, reducing pollution, increasing heart rate, socializing, and riding longer distances \u2014 these are all great markers of health and fitness.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And much, much better than a gas-guzzling car all round.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/can-you-keep-fit-and-healthy-riding-an-ebike\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whenever I mention ebikes to the kind of people who wear a lot of lycra, the most common response is an eye roll.
