On March 1, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov, <\/span>made an appeal<\/span><\/a> to eight commercial satellite operators.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRussia is bombarding our cities every day and night and so many civilians are in danger,\u201d Fedorov wrote in a letter <\/span>shared on Twitter<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe badly need the opportunity to watch the movement of Russian troops, especially at night when our technologies are blind in fact!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Fedorov urged the companies to provide satellite imagery to Ukraine\u2019s armed forces. He asked them to collaborate with <\/span>EOS Data Analytics<\/span><\/a> (EOSADA), a satellite imagery firm that will help process the data<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fedorov emphasized a particular need for data from one instrument in particular: called synthetic aperture radar (SAR).<\/span><\/p>\n

Ukraine\u2019s government also wants the birds-eye views provided by optical data, but this imagery has major blindspots.<\/span><\/p>\n

Optical satellites use visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared sensors to produce images, which makes them ineffective when it\u2019s overcast or dark.<\/span><\/p>\n

SAR overcomes these limitations by bouncing microwave pulses to Earth and back. The sensor then makes an image from the returned echoes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLive SAR data delivers critical insights on the enemy troops\u2019 disposition, relocation, and refueling at night, regardless of cloudiness \u2014 and this is what optical data can\u2019t provide,\u201d Aleksey Kryvobok, Chief Science Officer at EOSADA, told TNW.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Some companies have already answered the call for SAR data.<\/span><\/p>\n

They include Canadian firm MDA, which this week announced that it\u2019s received permission from the government of Canada to share the imagery.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cImages captured by MDA\u2019s SAR technology<\/a>, which is unique for its ability to see through all weather and cloud conditions, will be merged and analyzed with other sources of imagery from commercial Earth observation companies to develop comprehensive near real-time intelligence reports for Ukrainian government officials,\u201d said Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA, in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, not every satellite firm has responded to the plea.<\/span><\/p>\n

Concerns have been raised over <\/span>regulatory problems<\/span><\/a>, Russia <\/span>jamming the satellites<\/span><\/a>, and the broader risks of <\/span>private companies entering an armed conflict<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nonetheless, EOSADA believes the data can provide crucial assistance in both military and humanitarian efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n
