In a move redolent of <\/span><i><span>1984\u2019s <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Two_Minutes_Hate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Two Minutes Hate<\/span><\/a><span>, the company has temporarily permitted calls for violence and deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The social media behemoth has provisionally permitted hate speech in certain <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/facebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/instagram-2-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a> posts. There\u2019s no need to worry, however; the malice can only target Meta-approved baddies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Violent speech will now be permitted when targeting Russian soldiers and Russians in the context of the Ukraine invasion, according to internal emails <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ukraine-crisis-meta-platforms-idCNL3N2VD40U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>seen by Reuters<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meta is also now allowing posts that call for death to Russian President Vladimir Putin or his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The provisional policy change applies to Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese are temporary measures designed to preserve voice and expression for people who are facing invasion,\u201d Meta said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs always, we are prohibiting calls for violence against Russians outside of the narrow context of the current invasion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This new acceptance of hatred has been accompanied by a more affectionate exemption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to internal policy materials <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/02\/24\/ukraine-facebook-azov-battalion-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>obtained by The Intercept<\/span><\/a><span>, Meta will now permit praise of the Azov Battalion, a Ukrainian neo-Nazi military unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These dispensations arrive in horrific circumstances. Violent speech is a natural reaction to a brutal invasion, and the voices of victims should not be silenced. However, Meta\u2019s exemption has opened up a huge can of worms.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.3561643835616\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Responding to reports that the Russian government is considering designating Meta as an extremist organization for its policies in support of speech: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Y8sUbZDSML\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/Y8sUbZDSML<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nick Clegg (@nickclegg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nickclegg\/status\/1502349805221126144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">March 11, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The moves have added to suspicions that Meta makes up the rules as it goes along.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They have also added to suspicions that the company follows the foreign policy objectives of the US government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company maintains a secret blacklist of \u201cDangerous Individuals and Organizations\u201d that critics say punishes certain communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A reproduction of the material <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/10\/12\/facebook-secret-blacklist-dangerous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>published last October by The Intercept last October<\/span><\/a><span> revealed that nearly everyone on the list is considered a foe or threat by the US or its allies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Accepting calls for violence against Russians is also a risky move for a company that\u2019s been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/15\/technology\/myanmar-facebook-genocide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>blamed for inciting genocide<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Inevitably, the temporary exemptions have sparked fury in Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In response, Russian regulators have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/11\/russia-opens-criminal-case-against-meta-over-death-calls-on-facebook.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>restricted access to Instagram<\/span><\/a><span>, while prosecutors in the country want to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/russian-prosecutors-ask-court-name-meta-extremist-organisation-interfax-2022-03-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>designate Meta<\/span><\/a><span> as an \u201cextremist organization.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Russia had previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/04\/russia-completely-blocks-access-to-facebook-and-twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>blocked access to Facebook<\/span><\/a><span> in retaliation for restrictions on state-owned media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These reactions have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-60661987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>heightened concerns<\/span><\/a><span> that Russia is slipping into a different version of the internet.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A conflict that imperils the borders of nations now also threatens to Balkanize the web.<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/meta-temporarily-permits-anti-russian-hate-speech-sets-a-divisive-precedent\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cOrwellian\u201d references are invoked to the point of cliche, but big tech sure makes them hard to resist.
