Sitting on a bus means being close to people with questionable hygiene who do things like eat sausages and watch porn without headphones (or is that just Berlin?).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But startups are working hard to make buses a <\/span><i><span>thing<\/span><\/i><span> again. Currently, these <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/uk-cities-are-getting-all-electric-bus-fleets-starting-with-oxford-and-coventry-syndication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all-electric<\/a> connections are in a pilot phase with two buses traveling between Paris and Amiens, France, and a third <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/uk-first-self-driving-shuttle-bus-scares-passengers-away\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bus<\/a> operating between Hessen and Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg, Germany.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In June, the company announced more than $650M in new funding, based on a mix of equity and debt, valuing the business at $3B. They <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flixbus.com\/greyhound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>acquired Greyhound<\/span><\/a><span> in October 2021 for a hefty \u20ac148 million ($172 million).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since then, the company has branched out to trains, offering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flixtrain.com\/company\/renewable-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>FlixTrains<\/span><\/a><span>, powered by 100% renewable energy. Time for a rallying cry for rail?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rating: \ud83d\ude8d\ud83d\ude8d\ud83d\ude8d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Verdict:<\/b><span> Flixmobility is reliant on attracting and retaining bus drivers willing to drive long distances. In my experience taking buses throughout Europe, most of these people are cranky, uncommunicative, and act like they hate their job.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many stories circulate in Berlin Facebook groups of people popping out at a service station on route for a pee at an assigned break time and the bus driving away without them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Imagine standing around a service station when you don\u2019t speak the language, much less have your phone, wallet, or luggage. The US company markets itself as a purveyor of \u201caffordable first-class\u201d bus travel. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercedes-benz.com\/en\/design\/vehicles\/future-bus-revolutionary-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Future Bus<\/span><\/a><span> uses cameras and radar to navigate the roads, although the bus is targeted for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/whats-the-difference-between-driver-assist-and-autonomous-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>partial automation<\/span><\/a><span>, most likely moving into Level 4 functionality for purposes like highway driving.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So far, the Future Bus has only driven itself on a test track, so it\u2019s hard to know what to make of its autonomous capabilities.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Design-wise, the company has come up with a real doozy and what I like to call talking crap:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe design idiom combines classic seat contours with zeitgeist influences.\u201d I have no idea what that means either.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Passengers board via open sliding doors.
