And the tires are something special. They\u2019re made of NiTinol+ (nickel-titanium), a shape memory alloy that\u2019s elastic like rubber, yet strong like titanium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>NASA originally patented the idea in response to the challenge of developing tires for Mars, where there are no roads, temperatures can reach -100C, and tire performance is mission-critical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While the NiTinol shape memory alloys are extremely resilient, the company is also focusing on material recycling and mechanical repair, by reshaping and heat-treating localized damage or replacing individual elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>NASA Glenn Laboratory has been developing the technology for 7+ years, and the organization is at an advanced prototype phase. Their first product will be a bicycle tire launching in Q4 of 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sensors&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/sites\/nhtsa.gov\/files\/weinstein.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>mandated by law<\/span><\/a><span> since 2008 in the US and 2012 in Europe. Each tire consists of 35% renewable bio-materials. These include natural rubber from dandelions, silicate from rice husks ash, and vegetable oils and resins. This reduces the need for crude oil, traditionally found in tires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s also composed of 17% recycled materials, namely reclaimed steel, recovered carbon black, and polyester yarn.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They\u2019re not the only company switching to greener materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.goodyear.com\/us\/en\/media\/news\/goodyear-using-soybean-oil-based-rubber-in-tires.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Goodyear<\/span><\/a><span> has replaced petroleum-based components with soybean oil in some tread compounds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgestone.com\/technology_innovation\/natural_rubber\/guayule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Bridgestone<\/span><\/a><span> has its sights set on guayule, an evergreen shrub with a similar material makeup to the conventionally used para rubber trees.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Tires for EVs<\/h2>\n<p><span>Electric vehicles have specific challenges when it comes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/what-are-ev-tires-and-why-do-we-need-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>tire health<\/span><\/a><span>. The cars weigh more and bear the brunt of instant torque and acceleration. Combined, these lead to an increase in wear and tear. Worn tires increase a tire\u2019s rolling resistance and reduce efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/why-on-earth-is-michelin-launching-special-ev-tires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Michelin<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/goodyear-joins-michelin-launches-specialist-ev-tires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Goodyear<\/span><\/a><span> released their first tires designed exclusively for electric vehicles. The new iON tire development characteristics include further reduced rolling resistance, notably lower rolling-noise characteristics and high resilience.
