However, the current EV charging network can\u2019t keep up with the rising numbers.<\/p>\n<p>To improve the country\u2019s charging network, the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/tenfold-expansion-in-chargepoints-by-2030-as-government-drives-ev-revolution#:~:text=The%20UK%20's%20charging%20network,pumps%20on%20our%20roads%20today.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> today a new \u00a3500 million plan to help the UK market reach 300,000 public EV chargepoints by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>To put the numbers into perspective, that\u2019s a tenfold increase on the chargers\u2019 existing number of 28,375 \u2013 or an annual addition of 37,500 units over the next eight years.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, the plan will address two of the most pressing issues regarding the UK\u2019s charging network: limited charger numbers and uneven geographical distribution.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smmt.co.uk\/2022\/02\/uk-automotive-calls-for-ev-chargepoint-mandate-governed-by-independent-regulator-to-level-up-network-for-consumers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the SSMT<\/a>, plug-in cars grew by a whopping 280.3% between 2019 and 2021, while charging stations increased by just 69.8% in the same period.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the number of EVs<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/evs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/evs<\/a> on the road rose by an even more impressive 586.8%, whereas rapid and ultra rapid charger stock grew by only 82.3%.<\/p>\n<p>As for geographical distribution, the agency found that, in 2021, the ratio of electric cars to standard public chargers was 1:52 in northern Britain, compared to 1:30 in the south.<\/p>\n<p>If we also look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/electric-vehicle-charging-device-statistics-january-2022\/electric-vehicle-charging-device-statistics-january-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the government\u2019s data<\/a>, there are 102 public chargers per 100,000 people in London alone, but only 26 per 100,000 in Yorkshire and the Humber.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the government\u2019s promising a charging network that\u2019s \u201crobust, fair, cheap, and easy to use.\u201d Let\u2019s hope it sticks to its word, as the transition to EVs will play a pivotal role in the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/net-zero-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">2050 net-zero ambitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/uk-will-install-300k-ev-chargers-2030-its-about-time\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EV registrations in the UK have been increasing at an impressive rate during the past few years, which indicates an upwards trend in electrification.
