At this season\u2019s race in San Francisco, SailGP<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/sailgp.com\/#l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> a partnership with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/near.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <span>NEAR Foundation<\/span><\/a><span>, makers of blockchain platform Astro. And the prize is a cool $1 million for the winning team.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reimagining and democratizing sports team ownership<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>There\u2019s a long history in sport of getting fans closer to the race through ownership. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Historically it\u2019s been most prevalent in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/myracehorse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>racehorse<\/span><\/a><span> shareholding. Races only last about 15 minutes each, leaving plenty of time for shitposting and NFT trading. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even better, it\u2019s exciting stuff to watch. Today\u2019s race has seen two boats collide, causing damage, and the grand final was abandoned due to a whale being cited on the course (don\u2019t worry, it was restarted once the whale passed).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>So where does the DAO come into it?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>A <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/how-to-join-a-dao-decentralized-autonomous-organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DAO<\/a> (decentralized autonomous organization) is the perfect conduit for lovers of sailing and crypto. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A SailGP DAO could mean <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/cryptocurrency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crypto<\/a> fans not only get closer to the sport, but even buy their own sailboat and form their very own team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are currently eight teams competing with two more joining the league next season. The platform enables DAOs to coordinate and verify decision-making, rules, and governance through smart contracts and voting. It\u2019s a conduit to pool funds, vote on strategy, and verify transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/how-to-join-a-dao-decentralized-autonomous-organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a beginner\u2019s guide to joining a DAO<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>According to NEAR Foundation CEO, Marieke Flament, a SailGP DAO could allow fans to vote on everything from a team\u2019s logo to management structure. A DAO could even vote to have a women-only team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The partnership between NEAR and SailGP is also an opportunity to develop R&amp;D in areas like NFT and gaming, tickets, and Web3 apps for fan interaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What would a DAO sailing team look like?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>Unsurprisingly, sailing is not a cheap sport. It costs $25M to enter the SailGP and a further $7M annually, leading to a reliance on sponsorship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A DAO team seems an extremely viable fundraiser. Especially when you consider that <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/crypto-believers-bid-u-constitution-110057661.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">crypto investors raised $40M in 7 days<\/a> in an attempt to \u201cbuy\u201d the US Constitution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s also an opportunity to educate sailing people on blockchain tech and conversely crypto kids on all things sailing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Today\u2019s teams represent specific countries like Denmark, Australia, the USA, and Switzerland. A DAO team could be global and borderless instead of national.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Can blockchain tech get green enough to join forces with a race powered by nature?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>There\u2019s still, of course, plenty that needs ironing out. SailGP is the world\u2019s first climate-positive sport. And it\u2019s more than just whale conservation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> They launched an Impact League in 2021 alongside the physical race. Racing teams compete to reduce their carbon footprint and win prize money for sustainability NGOs (stayed tuned to find out all about it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, blockchain is not a space traditionally associated with sustainability. But NEAR is part of a bigger movement to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/crypto-mining-renewable-energy-solution-blockchains-carbon-footprint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mine crypto sustainably<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company uses \u2018proof of stake\u2019, rather than \u2018proof of work\u2019, to validate transactions. This discourages \u2018miners\u2019 that consume huge amounts of energy to compete with each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a result, the NEAR protocol is certified as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/near.org\/blog\/near-climate-neutral-product\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <span>carbon neutral<\/span><\/a><span> and according to the foundation, 200,000 times more efficient than Bitcoin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Thus, a SailGP DAO could serve as an example of effective green mining. Any DAO team would need to comply with the race\u2019s sustainability criteria.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>An opportunity for virtual racing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>There\u2019s also scope for immersive virtual racing in the metaverse where simulated sailboats race against physical boats in real-time, emulating the same weather conditions.
