But this doesn\u2019t necessarily translate to more people abandoning their cars for a trip by train, tram, or bus.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Or that people will continue using <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/voi-research-claims-escooters-can-boost-public-transport-use-syndication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">public transport<\/a> once the summer ends \u2014 no one likes waiting in the cold for a bus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Further, while the city of Berlin and other major cities like Hamburg and Frankfurt are well serviced by public transport, this is unsurprisingly not the case in rural Germany, where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kfw.de\/PDF\/Download-Center\/Konzernthemen\/Research\/PDF-Dokumente-Fokus-Volkswirtschaft\/Fokus-2022\/Fokus-Nr.-363-Januar-2022-Verkehrswende.pdf?utm_source=POLITICO.EU&amp;utm_campaign=d299db1c9c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_01_12_05_59&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_10959edeb5-d299db1c9c-190892252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>90% of households<\/span><\/a><span> own at least one car.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Low population density in rural areas limits the access and frequency of public transport. It also limits the development of bike paths and any last-mile solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kfw.de\/PDF\/Download-Center\/Konzernthemen\/Research\/PDF-Dokumente-Fokus-Volkswirtschaft\/Fokus-2022\/Fokus-Nr.-363-Januar-2022-Verkehrswende.pdf?utm_source=POLITICO.EU&amp;utm_campaign=d299db1c9c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_01_12_05_59&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_10959edeb5-d299db1c9c-190892252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>survey<\/span><\/a><span> earlier this year found that 75% of German households who regularly use their car are willing to switch to public transport. 66% could imagine taking their bike more often. The survey further revealed that rural folks are almost equally as willing to take a <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/why-2021-was-a-great-year-for-ebike-companies-and-investors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bicycle<\/a> as city dwellers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, it also found that 40% of German households who see their car as a status symbol are not willing to switch to a bike under any circumstances. An algorithm bundles travel requests from several passengers with the same destination. This creates a route, and books the passengers into a shared vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s cheaper than a taxi and more convenient than a bus, with over two million trips so far.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Could rural areas expand on this kind of initiative? I think it could be especially effective in regional areas with an aging population.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Thus, it could create a more lasting way to get people out of their cars, if not provide a bridge between home and <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/boston-free-public-transport-commuters-syndication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">public transport<\/a>.
