finally admits remote work wins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky on Thursday announced the company\u2019s 5-point plan to enable employees to live and work anywhere, all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Ostensibly because \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bchesky\/status\/1519832038613786626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The world has become more flexible<\/a>\u201d, and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bchesky\/status\/1519832076870057986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">We also had the most productive two-year period in our company\u2019s history \u2014 all while working remotely<\/a>\u201d (presumably, also: massive decrease in operating costs; consequent increase in profit margins).<\/p>\n<p>More highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bchesky\/status\/1519831962340388865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Chesky\u2019s thread<\/a> include the ability to move anywhere in the US without any change in compensation; As noted by Mitchell Clark for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23047593\/airbnb-remote-work-no-pay-cuts-location-countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Verge<\/a>, \u201cemployees at Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft will have to take a pay cut if they want to move to an area with a lower cost of living, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20220127-location-based-salary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">reports like this one by the BBC<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some online forums predict a mass exodus of employees from more expensive cities to Nashville, for example \u2014 where Airbnb\u2019s San Francisco-level salaries would be \u201cgame changing\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=31199833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">sic<\/a>] \u2014 signaling, once again, this now mighty scaleup\u2019s sustained influence over global housing and migration trends.<\/p>\n<p>If there are any lessons in this story for startups, it\u2019s probably in how much positive press you can generate when you give laptop-bound adults the freedom to choose where they want to live and work.
