company joins the ranks of big dirty liars <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/dieslegates-cost-volkswagen-over-30-billion-now-its-former-ceo-faces-conviction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Volkswagen<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/1-stellantis-unit-pleads-guilty-195921721.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Stellantis<\/span><\/a><span>, who tried to downplay the impact of their vehicles on the environment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Both companies used software to manipulate the exhaust settings and cheat on emissions tests.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>VW initially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/10\/8\/9481651\/volkswagen-congressional-hearing-diesel-scandal-fault\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>blamed a couple of software developers<\/span><\/a><span> going rogue for the scandal but later admitted to executive knowledge.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hino-global.com\/corp\/news\/assets\/e9e9de2a2a41bb0b5079f138f042b1a3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>results of the Hino investigation<\/span><\/a><span> into the how and why blame an inward-looking and conservative <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">company culture<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It \u201cprevented each employee from carrying out his or her work with a sense of involvement and solidarity.\u201d This led to a lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/this-is-how-to-repair-a-toxic-work-culture-syndication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychological safety<\/a>, with engineers feeling unable to challenge their superiors.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is psychological safety?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amycedmondson.com\/psychological-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Amy Edmonson<\/span><\/a><span>, a professor of leadership and management at Harvard Business School, psychological safety is:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><span>The belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes, and that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/committee-probing-toyota-unit-hino-blames-company-culture-false-data-scandal-2022-08-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>According to Reuters<\/span><\/a><span>, the Committee chairperson of the Hino inquiry, Kazuo Sakakibara, told journalists that past successes blinded the company to \u201cchanges in the external environment and values or the ability to look at themselves directly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe organization has become an ill-organized one where people are unable to say what they cannot do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A team with a high level of safety gives people the confidence to admit mistakes, contribute to discussions, raise concerns, question decisions (including those of their superiors), and ask for help.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How much is the Japanese work culture to blame?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>When you think of Japanese work culture, you probably imagine an old, deeply hierarchical company with excessively polite people who work long hours.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They commit to the company until they retire. Fortunately, it\u2019s changing, thanks to the mainstreaming of hybrid workplaces because of COVID and the fact that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2020\/08\/26\/national\/women-university-students-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>almost half<\/span><\/a><span> of university students in Japan are women.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the automotive industry isn\u2019t exactly known for diversity in the corporate divisions. Cases of sexual harassment persist.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The factory floor may be more diverse but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inputmag.com\/culture\/tesla-fremont-employees-allege-widespread-racism-on-the-factory-floor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>racially discriminatory<\/span><\/a><span>. Workers in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hmmusa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>US Hino factory<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/cmp\/Hino-Motors\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>complain<\/span><\/a><span> about a lack of flexibility:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou will be there most of your life. They do not care about your life outside of work. Just make Hino Motors the MILLIONS they make each year. You will probably be divorced, and your children will likely forget who you are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How will Hino improve its company culture?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>According to the report, Hino has committed to a range of cross-company changes, including:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>A revised \u201cBasic Philosophy System\u201d to guide all corporate activities to share values.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Renaming the \u201cHino Code of Conduct\u201d the \u201cHino Way.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Greater opportunities for dialogue at each level and workplace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Regular communication from management. This includes efforts to create an environment where employees can speak up safely and are encouraged to do so.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Establishment of a chief engineering compliance officer\/group.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Sure, it\u2019s a pretty ambitious wishlist that says everything right.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the \u201cHino Way\u201d sounds like another form of groupthink \u2014 what got them into this mess.
