{"id":12144,"date":"2022-09-02T18:31:15","date_gmt":"2022-09-02T18:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1391198"},"modified":"2022-09-02T18:31:15","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T18:31:15","slug":"researchers-train-ai-to-predict-ev-battery-degradation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=12144","title":{"rendered":"Researchers train AI to predict EV battery degradation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Lithium-ion batteries have become a key component in the rise of electric mobility, but forecasting their health and lifespans is limiting the technology.<\/p>\n<p>While they\u2019ve proven successful, the capacity of lithium-ion batteries degrades over time, and not just because of the ageing process that occurs during charging and discharging \u2014 known as \u201ccycling ageing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Batteries also degrade when not in use<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Lithium-ion battery cells also suffer degradation from so-called \u201ccalendar ageing,\u201d which occurs during storage, or simply when the battery is not in use. It\u2019s determined by three main factors: the rest state of charge (SOC), the rest temperature, and the duration of the rest time of a battery.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper shift channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/07\/shift.webp\"><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"src='https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/07\/shift.webp'\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\" readability=\"7\">\n<h2 class=\"channel-cta-title\">Hi there, EV nerd!<\/h2>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">Subscribe now for a weekly recap of our favorite mobility stories<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Given that an electric vehicle will spend most of its life parked, predicting the cells\u2019 capacity degradation from calendar ageing is crucial; it can prolong battery life and pave the way for mechanisms that could even circumvent the phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, researchers have been employingg advanced machine learning algorithms to accurately predict calendar ageing.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bridging research with the EV market<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In a recent<a href=\"https:\/\/open-research-europe.ec.europa.eu\/articles\/2-96\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> study<\/a> funded by the EU\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-2020_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> Horizon 2020 program<\/a>, a team of scientists took research a step further by comparing the accuracy of two algorithms on the wide spectrum of commercial lithium-ion battery chemistries.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, they drew calendar ageing data from six types of battery cell chemistries: Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LCO), Lithium Iron Phosphate (LIP), Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO), Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO), Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide (NCA), and Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC).<\/p>\n<p>These battery cells were calendar aged in temperature chambers at 50, 60, and 70 degrees Celsius, using high, medium, and low voltages.<\/p>\n<p>To predict ageing, the team investigated the efficiency of two machine learning algorithms: Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and an artificial neural network (ANN).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How do the algorithms work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Both algorithms were chosen for their ability to yield reliable results, but they differ significantly in their operation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/XGBoost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">XGBoost<\/a> is a decision tree-based, state-of-the-art supervised<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/machine-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> machine learning<\/a> algorithm that\u2019s widely used in regression or classification problems.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artificial_neural_network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ANN<\/a> is an artificial adaptive system that uses its base elements, called neurons and connections, to transform its global inputs into a predicted output.<\/p>\n<p>To evaluate their performance, the researchers used the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric, which measures the average magnitude of errors between predicted and measured values. Simply put, the smaller the MAPE value, the higher the prediction accuracy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What did the results show?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The algorithms\u2019 training showed that XGBoost can be used to effectively predict the calendar ageing of most chemistries with significantly minimal mean absolute error.
