{"id":12152,"date":"2022-09-09T17:57:15","date_gmt":"2022-09-09T17:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1391251"},"modified":"2022-09-09T17:57:15","modified_gmt":"2022-09-09T17:57:15","slug":"a-swedish-startup-is-plotting-to-bring-industrial-origami-to-outer-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=12152","title":{"rendered":"A Swedish startup is plotting to bring \u2018industrial origami\u2019 to outer space"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The ancient art of origami could have a future in <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Sweden\u2019s first astronaut <\/span>and the European Space Agency (ESA) this week unveiled a new project inspired by the paper-folding technique.<\/p>\n<p>The program will use technology designed by Swedish startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stilfold.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Stilfold<\/a>, a Swedish startup that\u2019s pioneered a manufacturing process called \u201cindustrial origami.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper neural channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/07\/neural.webp\"><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"src='https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/07\/neural.webp'\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\" readability=\"7\">\n<h2 class=\"channel-cta-title\">Greetings, humanoids<\/h2>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">Subscribe to our newsletter now for a weekly recap of our favorite AI stories in your inbox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The technique uses robotic arms to fold sheets of steel over curves to form complex and lightweight shapes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stilfold.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Stilfold<\/a> previously used the approach to&nbsp;bridge <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/escooter-looks-like-origami-duck-made-of-steel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an electric scooter<\/a>. According to the company, the techniques resulted in<span> 70% fewer components, a 40% &nbsp;reduction in weight, 20% lower material costs, and 25% lower labor costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The team believes such savings could be particularly powerful in space.&nbsp; they could allow&nbsp;<span class=\"s1\">complex structures to be constructed with minimal materials and components. Startups younger than five years may benefit from up to two years of business incubation, with access to technical, financial , and IP support, as well as \u20ac50,000 of funding,\u201d he told TNW via email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext to this, there are various ESA programs that could be attractive for SMEs, e.g. ESA Business Application Kick-Starters that provide funding for companies developing <span>space-based<\/span>&nbsp;applications. ESA has a patent portfolio with technologies which may be useful in another context.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally, ESA\u2019s SME office also has various ways of supporting startups too, e.g. getting training to apply to regular ESA contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are no guarantees that they\u2019ll get backed by ESA, but getting their tech in space doesn\u2019t have to take light years.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/esa-stilfold-plan-bring-industrial-origami-to-outer-space\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ancient art of origami could have a future in space.
