But Polestar aims to redeem the category, launching their third vehicle: Polestar 3. This is the company\u2019s very first SUV \u2014 and it\u2019s all-electric, as well as underpinned by some serious sustainability cred. It\u2019s an uncomfortable truth for environmentalists, but SUV sales are increasing. In 2021, SUV sales accounted for approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/245486\/suvs-share-in-chinas-passenger-car-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>48% of the passenger car market<\/span><\/a><span> in China. Also, in Europe, car buyers are shifting from hatchbacks and sedans to SUVs, representing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.best-selling-cars.com\/europe\/2021-full-year-europe-new-car-sales-and-market-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>45.5% of the cars purchased<\/span><\/a><span> in 2021. Of course, the US is the king of this market, with the vehicles accounting for 52.3% of sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper shift channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/07\/shift.webp\"><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"src='https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2022\/07\/shift.webp'\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\" readability=\"7\">\n<h2 class=\"channel-cta-title\">Hi there, EV nerd!<\/h2>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">Subscribe now for a weekly recap of our favorite mobility stories<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The reasons for this are varied. Car usage increased during the pandemic as an alternative to public transport. Car companies are also going all-in on higher-spend luxury vehicles to recoup the losses incurred during the delays caused by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/buying-a-new-car-maybe-wait-for-the-chip-shortage-to-end-first\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>silicon chip shortage<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Or, simply put, people <\/span><i><span>like<\/span><\/i><span> SUVs. As Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told us, \u201cYou can get in and out easily, you get great visuals from the higher seating, and you feel cool.\u201d So in response, Polestar is on a mission to create what they call \u201cThe SUV for the electric age.\u201d And it\u2019s taking SUV lovers along for the ride toward a greener kind of vehicle.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Polestar brand launched in 2017 and is co-owned by Volvo Cars Group and Geely Holding. Beyond the obvious merits of an electric vehicle, the company is aiming even higher, planning to build the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/a-closer-look-at-polestars-2030-climate-neutral-car\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Polestar 0<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 a climate-neutral car with zero carbon footprint \u2014by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is is a major task that extends far beyond electrification, and the Polestar 3 lays the groundwork. For example, aerodynamic efficiency increases through the front and rear aero wings to reduce drag. And, of course, the greater the aerodynamic efficiency, the greater the EV\u2019s range.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Materials transparency and keeping score<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>The interior upholstery of the Polestar 3 is stamped with text that will display the vehicle\u2019s life-cycle assessment of carbon emissions once production begins \u2014 part of Polestar\u2019s commitment to transparency. These CO\u2082 values will reduce year by year, the company says. Customers I spoke to at the launch liked this feature.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Polestar was the first car to announce the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/polestar-batteries-blockchain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>blockchain<\/span><\/a><span> to trace <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/the-cobalt-free-electric-vehicle-batteries-are-here\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>cobalt<\/span><\/a><span> in its batteries. Head of Sustainability Frederika Klar\u00e9n told us that this also extends to nickel and lithium sourcing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company is also going all in on recycling materials and circular design, and has a goal of closed-loop circularity. In other words, it wants to reuse car parts to <\/span><i><span>make<\/span><\/i><span> car parts. But there\u2019s room for improvement. For example, according to Head of Design, Maximilian Missoni, while cars can be picked apart, this is not always being done in the case of materials like aluminum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Although let\u2019s be clear, this car is no green martyr. It\u2019s a good-looking vehicle that would catch the eye of any SUV owner. You can upgrade to low-carbon leather by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeofweirleather.com\/lowest-carbon-leather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Bridge and Weir<\/span><\/a><span> if you must.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Raising the environmental standards of suppliers (such as their use of renewable energy) is significant to sustainability, with a flow-on effect across industries. Smaller manufacturers can test their products in a demanding supply chain.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As Klar\u00e9n notes, \u201csustainability is bigger than Polestar,\u201d stating that all OEMs are working on their climate goals, including calling for their competitors to have higher standards.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Polestar 3 is not just for greenies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>For all that, I\u2019m under no illusions that green credentials are people\u2019s primary concern when buying a car. First and foremost, it has to drive well. The Polestar 3&nbsp; brings some decent <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/whats-the-difference-between-driver-assist-and-autonomous-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Level 2<\/a> ADAS (<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/its-time-for-universal-terminology-to-describe-adas-features\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advanced Driver Assistance System<\/a>) technology like <\/span><span>Corner Traction Control and Trailer Stability Assist. There was even talk of remastering a Kraftwerk song for the sound system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Luxury vs. convenience&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>The rub with luxury SUVs is around how their owners <\/span><i><span>actually<\/span><\/i><span> use their cars versus. how they think they do. But the value-add of a large battery is questionable if you consider that most people don\u2019t drive their SUVs for hours at a time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Comparatively, the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/heres-why-byd-isnt-selling-more-evs-than-tesla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tesla<\/a> Model Y long-range has a 74kWh battery and a range of 531km. And the <\/span><span>Mercedes-Benz <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbusa.com\/en\/vehicles\/class\/eqs\/suv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>EQE SUV<\/span><\/a><span> (unveiled on Sunday in Paris) has <\/span><span>a 550km range with a 90.6kWh battery.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Personally, I\u2019d like Polestar to invest more in increased range in a smaller battery. The bigger the battery, the greater the carbon impact of manufacturing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Further, while <\/span><span>the Tesla Y and EQE SUV can carry up to seven people, the Polestar is limited to five, somewhat diluting the purpose of a large car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And, while Polestar is already working on the next three cars in this range, it has no plans to transition from the luxury market to smaller, more energy-efficient vehicles. This is disappointing as most people don\u2019t need big cars for their daily commuting. On top of this, Polestar (and its partners and suppliers) are undoubtedly stockpiling some mighty R&amp;D in terms of sustainability that could be used to set standards for all vehicles and drive future innovation \u2014 if the price point is right. It\u2019s getting closer, but the brand still has a long way to go to a carbon-zero vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What will the price point mean for rebates and incentivization?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>At present, the Polestar 3\u2019s $84,000 (\u20ac89,900) starting price makes it ineligible for US federal EV tax credits under the amended <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecoact.org\/article\/making-sense-of-ev-tax-credits-in-the-inflation-reduction-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Inflation Reduction Act<\/span><\/a><span> which is limited to electric SUVs priced up to $80k. So there\u2019s no price drop there.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s also unclear whether drivers will be eligible for charging benefits such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.electrifyamerica.com\/en-us\/releases\/159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>free 30-minute charging<\/span><\/a><span> offered by Electrify America customers for Polestar 2 owners.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, workplace rebates may prove more successful in the UK and Europe. I spoke to several Polestar 2 owners who purchased an EV under workplace schemes. One company had signed up 80 people in two weeks \u2014 so there\u2019s potential for traction in regions where such schemes are prolific.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But outside of that, Polestar has placed itself firmly in the luxury market. This limits purchasing to high-income earners or those eligible for attractive loans, salary sacrificing, or other workplace schemes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But how will innovation at the top trickle down to the cheaper vehicle market? What percentage of buyers will be those transitioning from ICEs? What do luxury electric SUVs mean for the future of the road (and parking)? Currently, these questions remain unanswered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Polestar 3 will begin production in mid-2023 at the Volvo facility in Chengdu, with first deliveries expected in Q4 of 2023 in Europe and the US. From mid-2024, manufacturing will also occur at the Volvo facility in Ridgeville, South Carolina.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So there you have it. An all-electric luxury SUV for people who like big cars and have money to spend. It won\u2019t change the impact of car dependency.
