The design was brought to life&nbsp;after it won the University of Surrey\u2019s public competition, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalroboticscontest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Natural Robotics Contest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The contest, which ran in the summer of 2022, invited the public to submit an idea for a bio-inspired <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/robot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">robot<\/a> that could help the world.<\/p>\n<p>An international panel of judges chose the robot fish concept designed by student Eleanor Mackintosh because it could help reduce the amount of plastic pollution in water. Siddall<\/a>, the team is envisioning a range of improvements for the robot, aiming to make it faster and smarter, as well as being able to operate autonomously, rather than being remote This means that anyone with a 3D printer can create their own microplastic-sucking fish.<\/p>\n<p>But the best part about the robot is that it highlights how public engagement and academic resources have the potential to tap into Europe\u2019s brightest minds and bring innovative ideas into life.<\/p>\n<p>The next Nature Robotics Contest will be announced in spring 2023.
