It\u2019ll officially go online and start solving problems on the 24<sup>th<\/sup> of November.<\/p>\n<p>While folks in the US are enjoying their Thanksgiving turkeys, Leo will be inaugurated in Italy where it\u2019ll go about the business of serving the scientific research community\u2019s most taxing computational needs.<\/p>\n<p>Leonardo by the numbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3,500 Intel Xeon processors<\/li>\n<li>14,000 Nvidia A100 GPUs<\/li>\n<li>4992 Intel Ice Lake computing nodes<\/li>\n<li>249 PFLOPS<\/li>\n<li>100 Petabytes storage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once it\u2019s formally online, Leonardo will officially become the second most powerful computer in Europe (behind its Finnish HPC system sibling \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/lumi-supercomputer.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">LUMI<\/a>\u201d) and the fourth most powerful in the world (Behind Japan\u2019s Fugaki in second and The US\u2019 Frontier in first).<\/p>\n<p>Leonardo was built as part of The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). With co-funding from the EU and several member states, the group\u2019s ultimate goal is to build the world\u2019s fastest supercomputer bar none: an exascale supercomputer aptly called <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/news\/eu-enters-exascale-era-announcement-new-supercomputing-hosting-sites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jupiter<\/a>, which is expected to go online in Germany in either 2023 or 2024.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s arguably most interesting about Leonardo is that it was apparently designed with upgradability in mind. Earlier this year the EuroHPC laid out <a href=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/new-calls-first-eurohpc-quantum-computers-and-upgrades-existing-eurohpc-systems-2022-03-31_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">future-facing plans<\/a> involving <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/quantum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quantum<\/a> processing upgrades for its existing supercomputers.<\/p>\n<p>Going forward, Leonardo is slated for some fancy quantum upgrades. Per the EuroHPC, Italian non-profit computing consortium <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cineca.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Cineca<\/a> will manage a new quantum computer on behalf of EuroHPC JU starting in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Leonardo\u2019s specific architecture, called MSA (Modular Supercomputing Architecture), allows it to be physically connected to a quantum computer through a wired network through an integration called \u201cco-localization.\u201d That\u2019s a form of hybrid quantum supercomputing that allows the two separate compute architectures to communicate at high enough speeds to share information loads.<\/p>\n<p>What this means for Europe is exactly what we\u2019ve been saying all along here at Neural: <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/analysis-europe-quantum-sector-poised-massive-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the European quantum computing sector is poised for massive growth<\/a>. Within the next couple of years, the EU should have the world\u2019s first, third, and fourth fastest supercomputers, with at least one of them operating in tandem with a quantum computer.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, as hybrid quantum computing technology continues to develop, the EuroHPC\u2019s Modular Supercomputing Architecture could very well ensure that Europe remains competitive with the US and China. Though, as far as supercomputers go, it remains to be seen if the EU\u2019s upcoming Jupiter system will outclass the US\u2019 upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/high-performance-computing\/supercomputing\/exascale-computing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Aurora<\/a>, yet another exascale computer planned for near-term inauguration.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/fourth-fastest-supercomputer-on-earth-is-a-quantum-ready-juggernaut-from-france\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s got two thumbs, can perform over 240 PFLOPS, and just gave Europe a 50\/50 share of the world\u2019s top four most powerful supercomputers?
