This means, it\u2019ll be capable of performing more than an exaflop (or 1 quintillion) operations per second. In other words, the device\u2019s computing power will<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fz-juelich.de\/en\/news\/archive\/press-release\/2022\/first-european-exascale-supercomputer-coming-to-julich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.fz-juelich.de\/en\/news\/archive\/press-release\/2022\/first-european-exascale-supercomputer-coming-to-julich\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">surpass<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>that of 5 million laptops or PCs combined.<\/p>\n<p>The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (<a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/index_en\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">EuroHPC JU<\/a>), which is being behind the project, has now signed a<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/one-step-closer-exascale-eurohpc-ju-and-forschungszentrum-julich-sign-hosting-agreement-exascale-2022-12-14_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/one-step-closer-exascale-eurohpc-ju-and-forschungszentrum-julich-sign-hosting-agreement-exascale-2022-12-14_en\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">hosting agreement<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>with the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fz-juelich.de\/en\/institutes\/ias\/juelich-supercomputing-centre-jsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.fz-juelich.de\/en\/institutes\/ias\/juelich-supercomputing-centre-jsc\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">J\u00fclich Supercomputing Centre<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>(JSC) in Germany, where JUPITER will be located.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span>Under the terms of the agreement, JUPITER (which stands for \u201cJoint Undertaking Pioneer for Innovative and Transformative Exascale Research\u201d) will be installed on the campus of the Forschungszentrum J\u00fclich research institute in 2023. The machine will be used to analyse key societal issues in Europe, such as health, biology, climate, energy, security, and materials. It will also support intensive use of AI and analysis of enormous data volumes.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\">Experts<\/span> expect the computer to improve research quality (while reducing costs), and integrate future technologies such as quantum computing.&nbsp; The device will be available to a wide range of European users in the scientific community, industry, and public sector.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span>Along with its outstanding computing power, JUPITER will feature a dynamic, modular architecture, which will enable optimal use of the various computing modules used during complex simulations. Notably, JUPITER has been designed as a \u201cgreen\u201d supercomputer and will be powered by green electricity, supported by a warm water cooling system. At the same time, its average power consumption is anticipated to be up to<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fz-juelich.de\/en\/news\/archive\/press-release\/2022\/first-european-exascale-supercomputer-coming-to-julich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.fz-juelich.de\/en\/news\/archive\/press-release\/2022\/first-european-exascale-supercomputer-coming-to-julich\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">15 megawatts<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>\u2014 approximately six megawatts less than the US&nbsp;<a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olcf.ornl.gov\/frontier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.olcf.ornl.gov\/frontier\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">Frontier<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>exascale supercomputer.<\/p>\n<p>Upon completion, JUPITER will become the ninth (and best) supercomputer the EuroHPC JU has provided to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europe<\/a>. Three are expected to be available shortly, and five are already operational. Among them is<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lumi-supercomputer.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.lumi-supercomputer.eu\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">LUMI<\/a>, which has been<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/lumi-fastest-supercomputer-europe-and-third-fastest-world-2022-05-30_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/lumi-fastest-supercomputer-europe-and-third-fastest-world-2022-05-30_en\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">ranked<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>the fastest in the EU and third fastest in the world.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/europes-first-exascale-supercomputer-jupiter-launch-germany-next-year\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JUPITER is set to become the first European supercomputer to make the leap into the exascale era.
