Dennis Laudick, VP of automotive go-to-market at Arm, attributed the growth to the number of chips required by high-end cars, which he described as \u201cdata [centers] on wheels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This trend is set to accelerate as demand for electric and <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/autonomous-vehicle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">autonomous vehicles<\/a> grows. Headquartered in Switzerland, the nonprofit produces an open-source chip architecture that\u2019s attracting swelling interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>RISC-V has proven <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/tech-war\/article\/3201887\/tech-war-china-bets-risc-v-chips-escape-shackles-us-tech-export-restrictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>particularly popular in China<\/span><\/a><span>, where it could spur self-sufficiency in semiconductors and circumvent US export restrictions. But it\u2019s also caught the eye of Silicon Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The architecture recently earned a glowing endorsement from Google. In December, Lars Bergstrom, Android\u2019s director of engineering, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2023\/01\/google-announces-official-android-support-for-risc-v\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>called for RISC-V<\/span><\/a><span> to be considered a \u201ctier-1 platform\u201d in the operating system \u2014 the same level as Arm.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\" readability=\"29\">\n<div class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteGradient\" readability=\"32\">\n<p class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteQuote\">\u201cRISC-V could be regarded as more risky.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Google\u2019s backing makes it quite possible that RISC-V smartphones running <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/android\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Android<\/a> will arrive within the next few years \u2014 which would escalate anxieties at Arm. The British firm does, however, have a big headstart in the automotive sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAlready, the company\u2019s main strength lies in producing application processors for mobile phones \u2014 and this will continue for as long as it takes for RISC-V to catch up,\u201d said Bergstrom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe automotive sector also has a high level of ecosystem complexity and historical conservatism. While this dynamic is slowly shifting, with disruptors like Tesla leading the charge, other automotive companies may take longer to steer the ship away from an established standard like Arm towards something newer like RISC-V, which could be regarded as more risky.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bergstrom advises RISC-V to target embedded segments such as IoT, which is more tolerant of risk and less dependent on an ecosystem of partners.
