That\u2019s because of the inherent carbon-intensive nature of steel production in blast furnaces, which currently represent the most-widely used practice.<\/p>\n<p>In blast furnace steel manufacturing, coke (a type of coal) is used to produce metallic iron from ore obtained from mining \u2014 which releases large quantities of carbon dioxide in the process. According to Dr Harriet Kildahl, who co-devised the method with Professor Yulong Ding, their technology aims to convert this <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/carbon-dioxide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carbon dioxide<\/a> into carbon monoxide that can be reused in the iron ore reaction.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\" readability=\"0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/valencia?utm_source=TNW+Website&amp;utm_medium=TNW+website+in+article&amp;utm_campaign=In+Context+Article+Ads&amp;utm_content=VLC+main+page\" data-event-category=\"Article\" data-event-action=\"In Article Block\" data-event-label=\"Get your tickets for TNW Valencia in March!\" target=\"_blank\" readability=\"2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/p>\n<h4>Get your tickets for TNW Valencia in March!<\/h4>\n<p>The heart of tech is coming to the heart of the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This is realised using a thermochemical cycle which performs chemical reactions through changes in temperature. That way, the typically damaging CO2 is turned into a useful part of the reaction, forming \u201can almost perfect closed carbon loop.\u201d This drastically reduces emission by the amount of coke needed and, subsequently, lowers steelmaking\u2019s emissions by up to 88%.<\/p>\n<p>As per the researchers, if this method was implemented in the remaining two blast furnaces in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK<\/a>, it could save \u00a31.28 billion in 5 years, all while reducing the country\u2019s overall emissions by 2.9%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent proposals for decarbonising the steel sector rely on phasing out existing plants and introducing electric arc furnaces powered by renewable electricity. However, an electric arc furnace plant can cost over \u00a31 billion to build, which makes this switch economically unfeasible in the time remaining to meet the Paris Climate Agreement,\u201d Professor Ding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/news\/2023\/novel-adaptation-for-existing-blast-furnaces-could-reduce-steelmaking-emissions-by-90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>. \u201cThe system we are proposing can be retrofitted to existing plants, which reduces the risk of stranded assets, and both the reduction in CO<sub>2<\/sub>, and the cost savings, are seen immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>University of Birmingham Enterprise has filed a patent application covering the system and its use in metal production.
