Val\u00e8ncia regularly <\/span><\/span>tops rankings<\/span><\/a> of the best cities in the world, due to its stellar combo of 300-plus annual days of sun, the Med on your doorstep, and a lifestyle that values free time, exercise, and good food. <\/span>But it\u2019s not all paella and chill. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Val\u00e8ncian region\u2019s startup scene \u2014 based mainly in its capital plus the smaller cities of Alicante and Castellon \u2014 has been revving up in recent years, and is now making its mark in everything from AI, fintech, and cybersecurity, to cleantech, healthtech, and industrial IoT.<\/span><\/p>\n

With TNW\u2019s first conference in Val\u00e8ncia<\/a> just <\/span>around the corner<\/span>, we rounded up a bunch of leading lights on the local tech<\/a> scene who have helped to grow the ecosystem over the past decade. Our aim was to get their take on where Val\u00e8ncia\u2019s tech scene is at today, what it\u2019s got going for it, and the challenges ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n

The heart of tech is coming to the heart of the Mediterranean<\/p>\n

\u201cI always say that we are in adolescence,\u201d <\/span>Javier Megias<\/span><\/a>, managing partner of the EMEA VC fund of <\/span>Plug and Play Tech Center<\/span><\/a> in Val\u00e8ncia, told TNW. \u201cThis is a really important moment, where you create your beliefs and the foundations of your life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the next few years everything is going to speed up quite a bit. We are at the tipping point of the change in the ecosystem, going from a regional, quite local ecosystem to something much more ambitious \u2014 and much faster.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Val\u00e8ncia by the numbers<\/h2>\n

Data shows a tech hub on the up-and-up. According to the Bankinter Foundation\u2019s Startups Observatory, investment in Val\u00e8ncia-based startups<\/a> grew from \u20ac58.5m in 2021 to \u20ac73m in 2022. Ecosystem tracking platform Dealroom reports that the Val\u00e8ncian region has the highest number of startups per capita in Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Research by <\/span>Startup Valencia<\/span><\/a> found the number of registered startups in the region rose from 1,012 in 2021 to 1,212 in 2022; Dealroom, meanwhile, has an even higher estimate of over 1,500 startups.<\/span><\/p>\n
