Alongside the insatiable desires for better batteries, durability, storage, and processing, camera quality <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/technology\/articles-reports\/2022\/02\/02\/smartphone-features-drive-brits-purchase-choices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>consistently<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.91mobiles.com\/hub\/smartphone-attributes-that-matter-most-survey-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <span>ranks<\/span><\/a><span> as a key factor when choosing a phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At CES 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/spectricity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Spectricity<\/a>, a startup based in Belgium, unveiled a new entrant to the competition: the S1 chip.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Spectricity claims the S1 is the first truly miniaturised and mass-manufacturable spectral image sensor for mobile devices \u2014 and the company is targetting sector dominance. According to Spectricty, this is something that even the best smartphones still can\u2019t do.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The problem stems from shortcomings in their white balance software, which is used to remove unrealistic colour tones. Our natural vision system does this remarkably well. When we see a white wall under sunlight or a fluorescent lamp, our brain adjusts the colour temperatures to make both scenes appear white. Smartphones attempt to do the same thing, but the results are often disappointing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\" readability=\"29\">\n<div class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteGradient\" readability=\"32\">\n<p class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteQuote\">\u201cNone of these cameras can recognise true colour.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Limited by the three RGB colour channels of red, green, and blue, their auto-white balancing algorithms struggle to correct unnatural colour temperatures. As a result, photos taken under incandescent bulbs can appear more orange than under sunlight, while shady areas can look bluer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEven though there\u2019s a lot of processing power behind these <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/camera-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cameras<\/a>, none can recognise true colour,\u201d Spectricity CEO Vincent Mouret tells TNW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To resolve this issue, the S1 sensor uses additional filters to analyse the spectral signature of an object. As the S1 can capture the full visible and near-infrared range at video rates, the imager could enhance numerous mobile applications. Spectricity envisions using the sensor for remote cosmetics, e-commerce, ID verification, skin-health analysis, and even smart gardening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A key component of these plans is the S1\u2019s improved rendering of skin tones. Smartphone cameras are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/google-real-tone-pixel-1.6363809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>notoriously bad<\/span><\/a><span> at capturing darker skin, which limits the inclusivity of photos. This connection has helped the startup amass 19 granted patents and 66 active applications, as well as 13 PhDs in their team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To commercialise the innovations, Spectricity has set up a high-volume manufacturing line at the <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xfab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">X-FAB foundry<\/a> \u2014 which is now ready for mass production.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The S1 is currently under evaluation by major smartphone makers.
