Cargo ports are vital transport hubs in the world economy. Around <\/span>90% of all globally traded goods<\/span><\/a> by tonnage is transported by sea and in 2021, a whopping <\/span>3.5 billion tonnes<\/span><\/a> of freight passed through EU ports alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Antwerp was the second-largest port in Europe \u2014 spreading across 120km\u00b2 \u2014 before a <\/span>merger<\/span><\/a> with Bruges in 2022 created a combined port area of 160km\u00b2 and the biggest chemical cluster on the continent. <\/span><\/p>\n

Val\u00e8ncia\u2019s expanding port is the largest on the European Mediterranean in terms of container traffic \u2014 and dates back to 1491. Its port authority, Val\u00e8nciaport, is responsible for Val\u00e8ncia, plus Gand\u00eda and Sagunto ports along the coast.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Ahead of their talks at <\/span>TNW Val\u00e8ncia in March<\/span><\/a>, we spoke to Erwin Verstraelen, Chief Digital and Innovation Officer at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and Juan Manuel D\u00edez, Strategy and Innovation Director at the Port Authority of Val\u00e8ncia, about how they are pursuing the newest advances in tech<\/a> to transform their ports.<\/span><\/p>\n
