Phill Robinson, the CEO of Boardwave, explained how Europe can replicate Silicon Valley\u2019s famous network effects, while Erwin Verstraelen, digital chief at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, divulged why he founded \u2018The Beacon\u2019, an IOT ecosystem of startups, scaleups, and researchers, to boost innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span aria-label class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>Many of the startups in attendance harbour plans for global expansion, but the conference speakers stressed that they need local roots. At a talk titled, \u201cGoing global: a VC\u2019s guide to preparing for international investment,\u201d&nbsp; Vanessa Palmer of CaixaBank DayOne said startups need people \u201cworking on the ground in that country who understand that market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.5064935064935\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We&#8217;re here at &#8216;Going global: a VC&#8217;s guide to preparing for international investment&#8217; at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TNWVal%C3%A8ncia?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#TNWVal\u00e8ncia<\/a>. For startups to succeed overseas, says <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vpalmerbcn?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">@vpalmerbcn<\/a>, they must have people &#8220;working on the ground in that country who understand that market.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UEY39dsY3Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/UEY39dsY3Z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TNW (@thenextweb) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thenextweb\/status\/1641387291330375680?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">March 30, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span aria-label class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span>The balance was succinctly summarised by one of the contenders in the startup pitch battle.<span aria-label class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span>\u201cOur base is in Spain, but our focus is global,\u201d said Mario Garc\u00eda-Granero,&nbsp;CEO and co-founder of&nbsp;<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/feending.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/feending.com\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">Feending<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>Amid the rush to innovate and grow, attendees of the event frequently expressed the importance of the tech for the good \u2014 particularly around sustainability.<\/span><span aria-label class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span> \u201cWe need to speed up,\u201d said Raquel Espada, sustainability lead at Schneider Electric in Spain. We don\u2019t have time. Climate change is happening, there\u2019s a wildfire near here right now and it\u2019s 30 degrees [centrigrade] in March.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>No doubt one of the most inspiring moments of the day came when endurance athlete and Barcelona ambassador Alex Roca took to the stage to share his unique perspective on persevering against the odds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We could go on and on about the highlights of Day 1, but then you wouldn\u2019t have any time to enjoy tonight\u2019s festivities and side events.
