This occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat.<\/p>\n<p>AMR is listed among the WHO\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/antimicrobial-resistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">most pressing health threats<\/a> of our time, with the potential to give rise to the next global pandemic as \u201cpan-drug\u201d-resistant strains emerge. It\u2019s also estimated that AMR associated infections already contribute to approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2022-01-20-estimated-12-million-people-died-2019-antibiotic-resistant-bacterial-infections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">5 million deaths per year<\/a> \u2014 more than AIDS\/HIV or malaria.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the EU-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/akthelia.is\/news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">IN-ARMOR<\/a> project, led by Aktelia and the University of Iceland, aims to tackle this challenge in collaboration with eight other universities and institutes and six companies across <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s aim is to develop a new type of drug that will boost the body\u2019s natural immune response, also known as \u201cinnate immunity.\u201d It will address infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\" readability=\"0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/conference\/why-attend?utm_source=TNW-Media&amp;utm_medium=article-promo&amp;utm_campaign=in-article-promo-whyattend\" data-event-category=\"Article\" data-event-action=\"In Article Block\" data-event-label=\"Join us at TNW Conference June 15 &amp; 16 in Amsterdam\" target=\"_blank\" readability=\"4\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">Join us at TNW Conference June 15 &amp; 16 in Amsterdam<\/p>\n<p>Here are four reasons why you can&#8217;t miss it<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>IN-ARMOR will tap into Aktelia\u2019s R&amp;D on innate immunity and antimicrobial peptides \u2013 short protein chains that play a key role in the immune systems of mammals, including humans. The <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/startup-company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">startup<\/a>\u2018s work builds on the research of the University of Iceland, which is one the company\u2019s owners.<\/p>\n<p>The project will develop the new medicine using computer-aided drug design and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/In_silico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">in-silico approaches<\/a>. It will harness nanotechnology to target drugs to specific areas within the body, extending their effectiveness and reducing side effects.<\/p>\n<p>Upon completion, IN-ARMOR will move to clinical validation. The team hopes that the new drug could be used not only in combination with other antibiotics, but also by itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy concentrating on stimulating the body\u2019s innate defences against infection, we can avoid the use of traditional antibiotics and develop revolutionary new treatments to tackle multiresistant bacteria. This could save countless lives across the world,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/english.hi.is\/news\/almost_isk_900_million_awarded_for_development_of_drugs_to_tackle_antibiotic_resistant_bacteria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Gu\u00f0mundur Hrafn Gu\u00f0mundsson, professor at the University of Iceland and CSO at Akthelia.<\/p>\n<p>If successful, IN-ARMOR would have the potential to save long-term \u20ac107 billion in antibiotics development.
