{"id":12839,"date":"2023-04-24T15:33:26","date_gmt":"2023-04-24T15:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1395802"},"modified":"2023-04-24T15:33:26","modified_gmt":"2023-04-24T15:33:26","slug":"irish-startup-and-cern-join-forces-on-experimental-energy-transmission-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=12839","title":{"rendered":"Irish startup and CERN join forces on experimental energy transmission project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An Irish <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/startups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">startup<\/a> has teamed with CERN to develop<span> a new form of insulation for superconducting cables, which are designed to accelerate the green energy transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Named <a href=\"https:\/\/supernode.energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">SuperNode<\/a>, the company has invented energy transmission cables that can transfer immense power across long distances. As the system requires less space and voltage than <span>conventional copper-based cables, the environmental impact is reduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These benefits derive from superconductivity. This phenomenon occurs when certain materials are cooled below their critical temperature \u2014 typically -180\u00b0C for high-temperature superconductors. As a result, superconductors can offer a<span>&nbsp;hefty power density and zero electrical losses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To harness this potential, SuperNode needs unique scientific resources \u2014 which is where CERN comes in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn its research, CERN pushes the limit of superconductivity to reach record energy levels and operates one of the largest vacuum systems in the world,\u201d said CERN\u2019s Paolo Chiggiato in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular, to avoid collisions with residual gas molecules inside the accelerators, we must reach extreme levels of vacuum. Vacuum is also used at CERN as a thermal insulator for our superconducting magnets. We believe that this know-how can be successfully applied to evaluate the technological solutions proposed to insulate the superconducting cables developed by SuperNode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To test the tech, CERN <span>will subject candidate materials to temperatures, pressures, and environments that replicate the conditions that the cables will face.&nbsp;CERN<\/span> will also design and develop a novel test rig to validate scale prototypes. The new <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">funding<\/a> followed<\/span><span> a previous \u20ac14m cash injection made last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>John Fitzgerald, CEO of SuperNode, believes adding CERN to the mix will provide a further boost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo meet increasing electricity demands, future transmission grids will have to reliably transfer bulk electricity over distances of hundreds of kilometres \u2014 connecting consumption hubs with areas of production, which are often located far away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that by working together, we can find innovative solutions to improve the world\u2019s energy infrastructure. The lab has just taken its first steps towards building a 91 km-long particle accelerator. The new system would more than triple the length of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) \u2014 currently the world\u2019s largest and most powerful particle collider \u2014 which will complete its mission around 2040.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The plans were revealed amid growing competition for Europe\u2019s leading position in the field.<\/p>\n<p>The most notable rival is China, which also<span> intends to build the world\u2019s largest particle accelerator. CERN\u2019s Malika Meddahi <\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.movies.yahoo.com\/movies\/cern-takes-first-small-steps-021952630.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">told AFP<\/a> last week that \u201cChina displays the same ambition\u201d as Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be vigilant and be sure that we are not on the verge of a change in this hierarchy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Some concerns have also been raised over the enormous cost of the new collider. Critics worry that the investment in fundamental science would be better spent in applied sciences.
