chip plant breaks ground in \u2018major step forward\u2019 for EU\u2019s semiconductor industry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>Germany\u2019s Infineon has broken ground on its new \u20ac5bn semiconductor manufacturing plant in Dresden, less than six months since announcing the project.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the construction as a \u201cmajor step forward\u201d toward the bloc\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/green-light-for-e43bn-eu-chips-act-in-big-boost-for-blocs-semiconductor-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>goal<\/span><\/a><span> of boosting its market share in semiconductors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europe<\/a> is currently scrambling to reduce its reliance on foreign imports of semiconductor chips from, among others, China, Taiwan, and South Korea. \u201cThese are regions where tensions can flare up at any time,\u201d said <\/span><span>von der Leyen, in a nod to the current <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/speech_23_2564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>tensions<\/span><\/a><span> between Beijing and Taipei.<\/span> <span>\u201cThe slightest disruption to trade would immediately hit Europe\u2019s strong industrial base and our internal market hard.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The bloc believes that boosting domestic production of the chips \u2014 essential components in everything from cars to smartphones \u2014 will mitigate the supply shortages that have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oeil.secure.europarl.europa.eu\/oeil\/popups\/summary.do?id=1692567&amp;t=d&amp;l=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>plagued<\/span><\/a><span> many of the EU\u2019s vital tech sectors over the past two years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Under the EU Chips Act, <\/span><span>which got the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/green-light-for-e43bn-eu-chips-act-in-big-boost-for-blocs-semiconductor-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>green light<\/span><\/a><span> last month,<\/span><span> the bloc is mobilising \u20ac43bn to <\/span><span>double its market share in semiconductors from 10% to 20% by 2030.<\/span><span> \u201cThe capacity will have to be quadrupled, and this is only possible with companies like Infineon,\u201d von der Leyen said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWith this groundbreaking, Infineon is launching an important contribution to the green and digital transformation of our society,\u201d said Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck at the ceremony on Tuesday. \u201cGlobal semiconductor demand will grow strongly and persistently in view of the high demand for renewable energies, data centres and electromobility.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed The new 300mm fab represents the largest investment in the company\u2019s history, and will add capacity to its current manufacturing site in Dresden.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other chip manufacturers are also currently investing in Germany. US-based Wolfspeed<\/span><span> is investing \u20ac2.7bn <\/span><span>to build a plant in Saarland, while Intel is building an even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/germany-intel-chip-plant-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>larger factory<\/span><\/a><span> in Magdeburg that will cost <\/span><span>\u20ac17bn.<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While the EU\u2019s chip plans are taking shape, von der Leyen warned that Europe was still too dependent on raw materials from individual suppliers, pointing to the fact that China controls 76% of the silicon metal supply needed for chip production.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To secure raw materials closer to home, she said the bloc is exploring new projects in Europe, but also partnerships with countries such as Australia, the US, and Canada.
