In March 2022, the Swedish manufacturer and the German state of Schleswig-Holstein signed a memorandum of understanding to construct a factory in the region. But in October 2022, Northvolt said it might postpone the plan and priotirise a US expansion instead \u2014 unless the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/european-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EU<\/a> was willing to match the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/public-and-social-sector\/our-insights\/the-inflation-reduction-act-heres-whats-in-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">IRA\u2019s<\/a> loftier subsidies for green technologies.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the German government has now confirmed it\u2019ll fund the gigafactory under the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_23_1563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework<\/a> (TCTF) \u2014 a new EU state-aid plan, designed to support the development of green projects in view of the US\u2019 respective subsidies and Russia\u2019s energy monopoly.<\/p>\n<p>The funding needs to be approved by Brussels first, but the federal government said it\u2019s already \u201cin the first constructive discussions\u201d with the European Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBacked by this commitment of the federal government, Northvolt has decided to take the next steps towards our expansion in Heide,\u201d said Peter Carlsson, founder &amp; CEO of the company.<\/p>\n<p>The gigafactory will have a 60GWh annual production volume of battery cells, aiming to supply approximately 1million <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/EVs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EVs<\/a>. It\u2019s expected to unlock a multi-billion euro private investment, and create 3,000 direct jobs with thousands more estimated in the surrounding industry and service sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the next steps regarding Northvolt, Germany can look forward to one of the most significant lighthouse projects of the energy and transport transition,\u201d said Robert Habeck, Germany\u2019s deputy chancellor and economy minister.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Commission\u2019s approval, the gigafactory still requires preparational on-site work for construction and the final building permission.&nbsp;Deliveries of the first battery cells are expected in 2026.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/northvolt-to-build-gigafactory-germany-after-state-aid-pledge\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Northvolt, Europe\u2019s biggest battery maker, has confirmed that it will build its next gigafactory in Heide, Germany, following the federal government\u2019s pledge to provide state aid.
