While we typically see the side of Europa facing Earth, this new study shows what this world might look like from its other side.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9520\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>This discovery is more than an interesting fact about the Solar System \u2014 it reveals secrets of the enigmatic moon.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1e6c\" class=\"jv jw fh au jx jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko kp kq kr ks cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Europa on the rocks<\/h2>\n<p id=\"4ec3\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy kt ia ib ic ku ie if ig kv ii ij ik kw im in io kx iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>The icy surface of <a class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/the-oceans-of-europa-may-be-habitable-ff900f0598ce?source=friends_link&amp;sk=d6fe90e2dd657d328de10a7a4cdfa1f4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Europa<\/a> is rich with salt, including magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) and sodium chloride (common table salt). Each type of mineral radiates specific wavelengths of light when releasing energy. These studies found that salts within the icy crust of the Jovian moon can glow in the dark.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f0a2\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Europa is one of the water worlds of our solar system, holding a vast ocean under its frozen surface.<\/p>\n<p id=\"aa2b\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201c[E]uropa\u2019s ice shell is 10 to 15 miles (15 to 25 kilometers) thick, floating on an ocean 40 to 100 miles (60 to 150 kilometers) deep. When these molecules relax, this energy is released as visible light.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3816\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cThese high-energy charged particles, including electrons, interact with the ice- and salt-rich surface, resulting in complex physical and chemical processes,\u201d researchers describe in <a class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41550-020-01248-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em class=\"iu\">Nature Astronomy<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6e2e\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>As seen by the human eye, the surface of Europa would glow green, blue, and white, depending on the types of salt emitting light. Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"1ed5\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>As Europa orbits <a class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/juno-storms-on-jupiter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a>, this tiny moon (slightly smaller than our own planetary companion) is bathed in high-energy radiation, including electrons.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e38e\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>As these electrons fall upon the surface of the icy moon, the incoming energy is released in the form of light, creating conditions where Europa glows in the dark.<\/p>\n<p id=\"151a\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cIf Europa weren\u2019t under this radiation, it would look the way our moon looks to us \u2014 dark on the shadowed side,\u201d Gudipati said. \u201cBut because it\u2019s bombarded by the radiation from Jupiter, it glows in the dark,\u201d explained <a class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/news.php?feature=7779\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Murthy Gudipati<\/a> of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).<\/p>\n<p id=\"6e78\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>The JPL team built a unique instrument \u2014 the Ice Chamber for Europa\u2019s High-Energy Electron and Radiation Environment Testing (ICE-HEART) \u2014 to examine how <a class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/curiosity-rover-finds-organics-on-mars-may-be-product-of-life-5b661fbe8cc9?source=friends_link&amp;sk=2f2376774574d8cbfc24803551c60304\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">organic material<\/a> in a simulated Europa environment would react to radiation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"321c\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>This discovery was a happy bit of serendipity for researchers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"22a1\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cSeeing the sodium chloride brine with a significantly lower level of glow was the \u2018aha\u2019 moment that changed the course of the research,\u201d said <a class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/jpl\/europa-glows-radiation-does-a-bright-number-on-jupiters-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Bateman<\/a>, co-author of a journal article detailing the study.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"244e\" class=\"jv jw fh au jx jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko kp kq kr ks cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Sailing the Alien Seas<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GqTaDCt_F1Y\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"jv jw fh au jx jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko kp kq kr ks cg\">In the video above, take a look at the upcoming Europa Clipper mission from NASA to explore an alien ocean in detail for the first time. This spacecraft will examine Europa during multiple flybys of the enigmatic moon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"cbbd\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Investigators are closely examining the capabilities of the instruments aboard the spacecraft to see how this study could aid that mission\u2019s exploration of the frozen surface of Europa.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e6c1\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Onboard the spacecraft, the Europa Clipper Wide Angle Camera could collect a significant amount of data about <a class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/protecting-mars-from-microbes-thanks-salt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">salt<\/a> concentrations on the icy moon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6ad2\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>This camera, utilizing a 4k x 2k CMOS detector, has a field of view of 48 by 24 degrees. From an altitude of 50 kilometers above Europa, details as small as 11 meters across will be seen as a single pixel.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b086\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>It might even be possible to take images of the \u201cnight side\u201d of Europa, glowing in the dark.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4be7\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>This study focused on Europa, but the findings may also be applicable to other large bodies in high-radiation environments, including Io and Ganymede in the <a class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/did-jupiter-collide-with-a-massive-planet-47353e4a9e62?source=friends_link&amp;sk=b38b80c83775cf91569cfb9f30d8e57b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jovian system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0292\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Europa is one of the most likely places in our solar system to find life.
