{"id":13113,"date":"2023-06-12T09:57:58","date_gmt":"2023-06-12T09:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1397358"},"modified":"2023-06-12T09:57:58","modified_gmt":"2023-06-12T09:57:58","slug":"germany-refuses-to-give-intel-more-cash-for-e17bn-chip-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=13113","title":{"rendered":"Germany refuses to give Intel more cash for \u20ac17bn chip plant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/tnw-blurple?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2023%2F06%2Fintel-germany-chip-semiconductor.jpg&amp;signature=66792fdfb9662f0de2e82c5dd0a4f50c\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span>Germany\u2019s finance minister says there is no money in the budget for higher subsidies for Intel\u2019s planned semiconductor plant in eastern Germany, Financial Times <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7663d813-504e-4ec7-84e8-ad9e272389f5?FTCamp=engage\/CAPI\/app\/Channel_Refinitiv\/\/B2B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>reports<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I<\/span><span>ntel\u2019s plan to construct a massive <\/span><span>\u20ac17bn<\/span><span> chip fabrication plant in Magdeburg, Germany, is a cornerstone of the EU\u2019s plan to produce 20% of the world\u2019s semiconductors by 2030.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the project has faced a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/intel-wants-another-5bn-subsidies-to-build-chip-plant-germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>number<\/span><\/a><span> of cost overruns, leaving Intel and Germany at a stalemate over who will foot the bill for the plant, now expected to cost in the region of \u20ac20bn.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Intel said in March that it wants \u20ac4-5bn more in state subsidies, in addition to the \u20ac6.8bn already dished out.<\/span><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\" readability=\"0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/conference\/tickets?utm_source=TNW+Media&amp;utm_medium=in-article-promo&amp;utm_campaign=in-article-promo-tickets\" data-event-category=\"Article\" data-event-action=\"In Article Block\" data-event-label=\"Tickets are officially 90% sold out\" target=\"_blank\" readability=\"4\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">Tickets are officially 90% sold out<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t miss your chance to be part of Europe&#8217;s leading tech event<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>But the authorities are unwilling to provide the American chip giant more money as there is \u201cno more available in the budget,\u201d Germany\u2019s finance minister <\/span><span>Christian Lindner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7663d813-504e-4ec7-84e8-ad9e272389f5?FTCamp=engage\/CAPI\/app\/Channel_Refinitiv\/\/B2B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> the FT on Sunday.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is a departure from an earlier statement in April when German officials said they would \u201cconsider\u201d boosting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/germany-intel-chip-plant-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>subsidies<\/span><\/a><span>, but only if Intel is willing to spend more on infrastructure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the FT, the debate over whether Intel should receive more subsidies or not has divided the cabinet.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Representatives from the left-wing Greens and Social Democrats support the call for increased subsidies, while Lindner, from the more conservative Free Democrats, said he would resist an increase in subsidies even if Intel were to increase the scope of the project.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This political uncertainty casts doubts over hopes of reaching a deal, in another potential blow to the project. Construction of the fab was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/intel-delaying-german-factory-start-wants-more-subsidies-volksstimme-2022-12-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>postponed<\/span><\/a><span> at the end of last year due to economic hurdles, which Intel attributed to high energy prices and inflation following Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine.&nbsp;<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While it may seem a simple matter of throwing a few billions more at the project, the chipmaker is facing serious cash flow problems. Late last year, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/27\/intel-stock-tumbles-after-brutal-quarter-full-year-results.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> the company would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/27\/intel-stock-tumbles-after-brutal-quarter-full-year-results.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>cut<\/span><\/a><span> as much as $10bn in annual spending by 2025.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Either way, resolving the funding dispute will be critical to the future of the project.
