As the hype sparked by Facebook\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/facebook-new-name-is-meta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rebrand<\/a><\/span><span>&nbsp;fades amid <\/span><span><\/span><span>jaw-dropping <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/numbers-behind-meta-stock-market-crash-facebook-metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">losses<\/a><\/span><span>, <\/span><span><\/span><span>risible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/mark-zuckerberg-spent-dollar10b-on-the-metaverse-and-all-he-got-was-this-stupid-selfie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">selfies<\/a>,<\/span><span>&nbsp;and the generative AI boom, reality is setting in \u2014 which is when things start getting interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>Metaverse stalwarts are now fighting for competing visions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On one side are the centralised platforms owned by the likes of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Meta<\/span><\/a><span> and Roblox. Under the control of all-powerful tech giants, these virtual worlds exist in siloes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the other side stand advocates for open, interconnected, and decentralised <\/span><span>metaverses<\/span><span>. In these utopian realms, users can freely traverse spaces and take ownership of their experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Improbable has firmly planted its flag in the latter camp. The company spent a decade building immersive virtual worlds, from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.army-technology.com\/analysis\/modelling-defence-improbable-defence-simulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>military<\/span><\/a><span> simulations<\/span><span> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ims.improbable.io\/insights\/worlds-first-k-pop-concert-in-the-metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>K-pop<\/span><\/a><span> parties<\/span><span>, before pivoting to building metaverse infrastructure. In Roblox, for instance, you can use build games, buy weapons, and spend the Robux currency. But you can\u2019t take any of that into Fortnite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>MSquared hopes to dismantle these barriers. Using a suite of technologies, services, and standards \u2014 as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.improbable.io\/blog\/improbable-raises-usd150m-to-establish-metaverse-network-and-ecosystem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>$150m<\/span><\/a><span> (\u20ac138m) in funding \u2014 the project promises to power a nexus of interlinked worlds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If all goes to plan, the virtual experiences will extend across multiple platforms and an interoperable economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m going to get shouted at for calling it this, but one way to describe it is a \u2018meta-metaverse\u2019,\u201d Rob Whitehead, Improbable\u2019s co-founder and chief product officer, told TNW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whitehead compares the concept to international travel. In this analogy, virtual worlds are akin to individual nations with open borders. Metaverse owners can charge fees to access their spaces, but they also have to <\/span><span>pay service providers for supplying the infrastructure<\/span><span>. Creators, meanwhile, can monetise their content.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Users could, for instance, buy tickets to concerts, digital clothes to wear, furniture for virtual houses, or upgrades to make their avatars fly. It may sound ridiculous for those of us struggling to make ends meet IRL, but people already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/big-spenders-fortnite-rakes-in-5-1bn-from-gamer-purchases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>spend billions<\/span><\/a><span> in basic virtual worlds. As the experiences improve, the digital economy could rapidly expand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In time, Improbable wants to add over 10,000 people to the MSquared network. But before they come, someone has to build it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Weaving a metaverse fabric<\/h2>\n<p><span>Users have not yet been invited to the <\/span><span>MSquared virtual party. Improbable has built the ecosystem\u2019s foundations, but it wants<\/span> <span>to expand the network before the public release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The current centrepiece of MSquared is Improbable\u2019s Morpheus platform, which is comprised of tools and services for creating, operating, and monetising metaverse experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The system has already powered <\/span><span>mass-scale experiences. NVIDIA is providing the backbone for high-fidelity graphics, Google Cloud is supplying cloud infrastructure, Dolby is delivering video content, and Ubitus is supporting worldwide streaming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Improbable is now expanding access to the builder community. The next step will be creating and incentivising a cross-metaverse economy through shared commercial structures and free movement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ultimately, Narula envisions the system becoming far <\/span>bigger than any one company or individual metaverse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMSquared initiates a radically different and novel business model, where ownership and interoperability work together, and creates an environment where creativity flourishes alongside the growth of economically viable businesses within a shared space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s a grand ambition that still needs to be turned into reality.
