After extraction, the cells are placed in a bioreactor and grown into muscle tissue. Finally, the flesh is shaped into the type of cuts found on supermarket shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents say the process reduces our carbon footprint and prevents animal suffering, while producing the same meat products that we know and love. It could also be big business: consulting<span>&nbsp;firm&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/agriculture\/our-insights\/cultivated-meat-out-of-the-lab-into-the-frying-pan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-934287_1021=\"450\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-934287_1021=\"450\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-934287_1021=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-934287_1021=\"1\"><span>McKinsey predicts<\/span><\/a><span> the market for cultivated meat could reach $25 billion (\u20ac23 billion) by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That market could now slowly start to open up. Only Singapore had previously permitted sales of cultivated meat. The USDA approval brings one of the world\u2019s biggest consumers and producers of meat to the table. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europe<\/a>, cultivated meat <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/startups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">startups<\/a> want regulators to follow the USDA\u2019s lead. Among them are 3D Bio-Tissues, a N<span>ewcastle University spin-out<\/span><span>. In February, the Newcastle University spin-out unveiled the first-ever lab-grown <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/uk-startup-3dbt-unveils-worlds-first-cultivated-steak-fillet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">steak fillet<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Che Connon, the firm\u2019s CEO, described the new approvals as \u201ca monumental milestone\u201d for the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bf\"><span class=\"au\">\u201cUS regulations for food safety are some of the most stringent in the world\u2026 This decision has the potential to rapidly accelerate the development of the cultivated meat market in America and provides a clear framework for other countries to also follow,\u201d he said.<\/span><span class=\"bg\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1393975 js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2023\/02\/Untitled-design.jpg\" alt=\"This is the 'world's first' 100% cultivated pork steak. Meatable, for instance, is now working<\/span><span> to secure US approval for its products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some industry insiders worry that Europe is falling behind. The Good Food Institute, a non-profit think tank, has called for the continent\u2019s policymakers to catch up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican consumers will soon be able to taste real chicken made without farming animals \u2014 so European companies are beginning to look across the Atlantic to take their products to market,\u201d said Alice Ravenscroft, head of policy at the non-profit Good Food Institute Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCultivated meat has the potential to slash emissions, boost our food security and expand consumer choice.
