But internet-connected devices have muddied the waters somewhat. As a Commision spokesperson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_1113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>noted<\/span><\/a><span> last year, <\/span><span>\u201cData has made it more difficult, because, actually, who\u2019s in control of the data you generate with connected objects?\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Everything from phones and cars to windmills and coffee machines gather data. Mostly, this data is accessible only to the manufacturer (think, big tech companies) and not to the user.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Data Act looks to change that. \u201cConsumers will have the right to access all of this data, free of charge and in real-time,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/speech_22_1312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> the EU\u2019s digital chief Margrethe Vestager, when the act was unveiled last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Announcing the deal on Tuesday, EU politicians emphasised the need for harmonised rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOnce the data act enters into force, it will unlock the economic and societal potential of data and technologies and contribute to an internal market for data,\u201d said <\/span><span>Erik Slottner, public administration minister for Sweden, which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the EU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt will enhance the single market, allowing data to flow freely within the EU and across sectors for the benefit of our citizens and businesses,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Data Act has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4a647843-84ce-458b-8494-782166705f07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>hailed<\/span><\/a><span> as the final and, potentially, most important part of the EU\u2019s digital transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s one of five pieces of legislation that aim to overhaul the bloc\u2019s digital rules alongside the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, Artificial Intelligence Act, and the Data Governance Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Not everyone\u2019s happy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>While individuals and businesses are set to benefit from the new rules, manufacturers aren\u2019t so peachy. <\/span><span>The CEOs of several large European firms and trade organisation DigitalEurope wrote to the Commission last month to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2023\/05\/08\/leading-eu-ceos-warn-brussels-data-law-could-hurt-competitiveness-cybersecurity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>express<\/span><\/a><span> their concerns over the text.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They are afraid that being forced to share data with other companies, including those outside the bloc, could undermine European leadership and innovation and leave them vulnerable to cybersecurity threats and copyright infringements.&nbsp; <\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Siemens Healthineers, a German manufacturer of medical equipment, said it considers the Data Act to be \u201cmore of a threat than an opportunity.\u201d Siemens <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/europe-new-data-act-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> it is worried that the law could expose commercially sensitive data.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The deal, DigitalEurope said on Wednesday, \u201cfails to achieve the necessary balance\u201d.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Following the provisional agreement reached this week, the Data Act will now wind its way through the legal system.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Companies will then have to abide by its rules roughly 20 months later, meaning it\u2019s likely to be a couple of years before the Data Act\u2019s measures come into effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/eu-data-act-big-tech\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Negotiators representing the European Parliament and EU countries struck a deal this week on a new set of rules governing how individuals and businesses access and share data in the bloc.&nbsp;
