{"id":13530,"date":"2023-08-28T18:53:05","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T18:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1399304"},"modified":"2023-08-28T18:53:05","modified_gmt":"2023-08-28T18:53:05","slug":"myanmar-genocide-refugees-take-meta-to-irish-court-over-disinformation-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=13530","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar genocide refugees take Meta to Irish court over disinformation claims"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>Rohingya refugees are taking Meta to Ireland\u2019s High Court for the tech giant\u2019s alleged role in the 2017 Myanmar genocide, one of the worst war crimes of this century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Friday (25 August) marked six years since the start of the ethnic cleansing, which saw <\/span><span>more than 25,000 people of Muslim <\/span><span>Rohingya descent <\/span><span>killed by Myanmar\u2019s military, with a further 700,000 displaced.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2018, UN human rights <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/15\/technology\/myanmar-facebook-genocide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>investigators<\/span><\/a><span> said the use of Meta\u2019s social media platform <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/facebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> had played a key role in spreading hate speech that fuelled the violence. <\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFacebook\u2019s algorithms and Meta\u2019s ruthless pursuit of profit created an echo chamber that helped foment hatred of the Rohingya people and contributed to the conditions which forced the ethnic group to flee Myanmar en masse,\u201d read a statement by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/press-releases\/myanmar-meta-must-pay-reparations-rohingya-people-role-ethnic-cleansing#:~:text=%E2%80%9CSix%20years%20have%20gone%20by,still%20awaiting%20reparations%20from%20Meta.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Amnesty International<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper latest channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\" readability=\"8.5\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/events.tnw\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/events.tnw\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\" readability=\"12\">\n<p class=\"channel-cta-title\">The &lt;3 of EU tech<\/p>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">The latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol&#8217; founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>In 2018, Facebook <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-myanmar-facebook-rohingya-idUSKBN1L1066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>admitted<\/span><\/a><span> it had been \u201ctoo slow\u201d in addressing hate speech in Myanmar and was acting to remedy the problem by hiring more Burmese speakers and investing in technology to identify problematic content. To date, the company has not paid any compensation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI blame Facebook, its parent company Meta, and the man behind it all, Mark Zuckerberg, for helping create the conditions that allowed the Myanmar military to unleash hell upon us,\u201d wrote <\/span><span>Maung Sawyeddollah, a Rohingya refugee in Bangladesh, in an op-ed for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2023\/8\/25\/facebook-should-pay-for-what-it-did-to-my-people-rohingya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Al Jazeera<\/span><\/a><span> last week. \u201c<\/span><span>The social media company allowed anti-Rohingya sentiments to fester on its pages. Its algorithms promoted disinformation that eventually translated into real-life violence.\u201d <\/span><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The cases, filed last week, were brought by two Dublin-based law firms that represent 17 Rohingya refugees. Ireland, the cases will likely argue, is the most appropriate country to bring the litigation since Meta is headquartered there and the content moderation was done in Dublin.&nbsp; <\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is not the first time that the Rohingya have instigated legal proceedings against Meta. In 2021, a $150bn lawsuit was filed in California but later dismissed for a number of reasons, including a provision in the US\u2019 Communications Decency Act that gives immunity to platforms like Facebook which publish third-party content. It remains to be seen whether the Irish courts will come to a similar judgement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Either way, the case raises a number of serious concerns about the spread of disinformation on social media platforms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ironically, <\/span><span>the sixth anniversary of the Rohingya genocide fell on the same day that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/eu-digital-services-act-changes-content-rules-for-big-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>EU\u2019s Digital Services Act came into effect<\/span><\/a><span>.
