The automaker is citing shrinking demand, fuelled by recent cuts to government subsidies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Production of VW\u2019s ID.3 and Cupra\u2019s Born will be put on hold at the carmaker\u2019s main EV factory in Zwickau until October 16. Assembly of the ID.3 at a small-scale plant in Dresden will cease for the first two weeks of October, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/volkswagen-temporarily-pause-production-two-ev-car-models-due-drop-demand-2023-09-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>spokesperson<\/span><\/a><span> said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Production of the ID4, ID5, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Audi Q4 Sportsback e-tron models will continue as usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Volkswagen has been having a tough time lately selling enough of its made-in-Germany electric cars, as rival brands like America\u2019s Tesla and China\u2019s BYD continue to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/tesla-europe-ev-market-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>dominate the market<\/span><\/a><span>. Moreover, <\/span><span>stunted economic growth as well as higher costs of living in Europe have slowed demand for its ID fleet of EVs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another factor has been the reduction of EV subsidies by the German government. At the start of this year, support for battery electric or fuel cell cars dropped from <\/span><span>\u20ac<\/span><span>6,000 to <\/span><span>\u20ac<\/span><span>3,000-<\/span><span>\u20ac<\/span><span>4,500 and will be cut further from January 2024.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\" readability=\"0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ai.live.ft.com\/home?promo=TNW&amp;tr=true?utm_source=ft_live&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Global%7Cteam%7Cevent_registration%7Cprospecting%7Cbau%7C2023_ai_transformational_london&amp;utm_term=carousel\" data-event-category=\"Article\" data-event-action=\"In Article Block\" data-event-label=\"Powering the next business revolution\" target=\"_blank\" readability=\"4\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">Powering the next business revolution<\/p>\n<p>Join the Financial Times &amp; TNW Future of AI Summit on November 15 &amp; 16<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Subsidies for company EVs, however, were axed entirely from September 1, a major hit to VW\u2019s Zwickau factory \u2014 s<\/span><span>ome 70% of its EVs made there are destined to be company cars.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Volkswagen did not comment on how workers at the two factories would be affected by the production freeze, but it did announce a few weeks back that it will let go of nearly 300 employees at the <\/span><span>Zwickau plant<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Faced with rising costs in Europe, VW and other manufacturers like BMW and Tesla are increasingly building their cars in China and exporting them into the bloc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Volkswagen now wants to have the new electric SUV Cupra Tavascan produced in a factory in China.
