Researchers at Cornell University have now found evidence of an ancient massive megaflood on the Red Planet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0f82\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Gale Crater, explored by the Curiosity rover, provided data showing distinct signs of a titanic flood, roughly four billion years in the past. This finding could provide further evidence that<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/bacteria-mining-the-moon-and-mars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>once had a climate suitable for the development of primitive life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e142\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cWe identified megafloods for the first time using detailed sedimentological data observed by the rover Curiosity. These waves are placed roughly 140 meters (450 feet) apart from each other.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3467\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Ezat Heydari, a professor of physics at Jackson State University, points out that similar features, created just two million years ago, are known on<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/curiosity-rover-finds-organics-on-mars-may-be-product-of-life-5b661fbe8cc9?source=friends_link&amp;sk=2f2376774574d8cbfc24803551c60304\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>. On our own planet, these features are created by melting ice.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9975\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cFeatures indicative of floods are a series of symmetrical, 10 m-high gravel ridges that occur in the Hummocky Plains Unit (HPU). This period was marked by massive, frequent collisions between planets and objects, large and small, coursing through the Solar System. This era also marks the time when<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/the-cosmic-companion\/episodes\/Designing-Soil-for-Farming-on-Mars---Laura-Fackrell-Unv--of-GA---Astronomy-News-with-The-Cosmic-Companion-Nov--10--2020-em9t73\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>was, literally, awash with water.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e71d\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Researchers speculate these megaripples are the result of heat generated by a massive impact on Mars in the distant past. Such an impact would have released vast quantities of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane from beneath the surface of Mars, warming the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/could-methane-on-mars-be-a-sign-of-life-220c237840cd?source=friends_link&amp;sk=b2a81fda5f8d998537e0eb37109d8ce0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Red Planet<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>for a short time.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c00d\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Water vapor rising into the Martian atmosphere would have formed water clouds, much like those on Earth. These conditions, in turn, led to torrential rains which may have engulfed the Red Planet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"96d4\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Gale Crater would have been flooded by<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/what-is-the-origin-of-water-on-planets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">water<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>pouring into the basin, including a torrent racing down the steep incline of Mount Sharp.<\/p>\n<p id=\"affa\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Water from the south of the crater, racing north, was at least 24 meters (nearly 80 feet) deep, moving at 10 meters per second (20\u201325 MPH), the study concluded.<\/p>\n<p id=\"cc5f\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Massive flash floods would have deposited the gravel ridges seen by Curiosity in the Hummocky Plains Unit and the Striated Unit. These ridge-and-trough band formations, resembling waves in the ground, dominate large regions of Arizona.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"48c2\" class=\"jk jl do cf jm jn jo jp jq jr js jt ju jv jw jx jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh el\" data-selectable-paragraph>My name is Henry Gale! (Image credit: NASA\/JPL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"412d\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Sitting near the Martian equator, Gale Crater was formed more than 3.5 billion years ago in a titanic explosion, when<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/water-vapor-seen-rapidly-escaping-from-mars-3a4639f29099?source=friends_link&amp;sk=917e858b0a5be0286cf3a0302037108e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>was struck by a massive asteroid. Named for Australian astronomer Walter F. Gale, this Martian crater stretches 154 km (96 miles) from one side to another.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6dbb\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>On August 5, 2012, the Mars Science Laboratory (commonly known as the Curiosity rover) touched down at the foot of a layered mountain on the floor of Gale Crater.<\/p>\n<p id=\"210b\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>This robotic explorer found that Gale Crater was home to large bodies of<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/water-on-ceres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">water<\/a>, which lasted for a significant period of time before Mars lost its surface water to space and hidden underground deposits of brine.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"jh ji jj\" readability=\"8\">\n<p id=\"3a75\" class=\"gv gw hu gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cThere was an ocean above us, held in by a thin sac that might rupture and let down a flood at any second.\u201d<br \/>\u2015 Stephen King, Different Seasons<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"4d69\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Near the center of the crater sits Mt. Sharp, a crescent-shaped formation of sedimentary rocks 5 km (three miles) across. This peak, named in honor of geologist Robert Sharp, is taller than Mt. Rainier. Massive canyons of<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl jg\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qe9GBvydFf0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>seen on Mt. Sharp include the Grand Canyon of Gale Crater, two thousand meters (6,500 feet) wide and nearly 90 meters (300 feet) deep.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ce9b\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cEarly Mars was an extremely active planet from a geological point of view. The planet had the conditions needed to support the presence of liquid water on the surface \u2014 and on Earth, where there\u2019s water, there\u2019s life. So early Mars was a habitable planet. Was it inhabited?
