After taking the title of the Collins Dictionary <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/ai-named-collins-word-of-the-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">word of the year<\/a>, artificial intelligence this week assailed the Cambridge version.<\/p>\n<p>This time, the impact is more subtle \u2014 but deeper. The first example emerged from Cambridge\u2019s word of the year for 2023: \u201challucinate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an old word, but the award is due to a new meaning. In the latest versions of the Cambridge Dictionary, \u201challucinate\u201d has an <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/hallucinate?utm_source=cambridge_dictionary&amp;utm_medium=ceros&amp;utm_campaign=woty2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">extra definition<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen an artificial intelligence (= a computer system that has some of the qualities that the human brain has, such as the ability to produce language in a way that seems human) hallucinates, it produces false information.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To clarify the concept, the entry also includes two examples:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>LLMs are notorious for hallucinating \u2014 generating completely false answers, often supported by fictitious citations.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The latest version of the chatbot is greatly improved but it will still hallucinate facts.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Hallucinating words<\/h2>\n<p>At TNW Towers, we welcome Cambridge\u2019s intervention. Tech experts may argue that they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/ai-hallucinations-solution-iris-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reducing hallucinations<\/a>, but the problem is far from solved \u2014 and the results can be alarming.<\/p>\n<p>ChatGPT, for instance, can spoutdangerous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/25\/chatgpts-cancer-treatment-advice-potentially-dangerous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">medical advice.<\/a>&nbsp;Security analysts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/chatgpt-hallucinations-can-be-exploited-to-distribute-malicious-code-packages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fear<\/a>&nbsp;the bot\u2019s hallucinations could also drive malicious <span>code towards<\/span>&nbsp;software developers.<\/p>\n<p>There are also risks for the Cambridge Dictionary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManaging the tendency of generative <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"urn:enhancement-c04624a9-0095-4cb5-a7fa-9de7adb105b3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.thenextweb.com\/tnw\/entity\/ai\">AI<\/span><\/a> tools to hallucinate will be key to ensuring our users can continue to trust us,\u201d said Wendalyn Nichols, the book\u2019s publishing manager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emergence of a new meaning of hallucinate is a great case in point.&nbsp; It\u2019s human experts tracking and capturing changes in the language that make the Cambridge Dictionary a trustworthy source of information about new words and senses \u2014 ones the public-facing AI tools won\u2019t have learned yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>AI\u2019s second linguistic influence<\/h2>\n<p>The new meaning of hallucinate isn\u2019t the only mark of AI on the Cambridge lexicon.<\/p>\n<p>During 2023, lexicographers have added various definitions related to artificial intelligence, including large language model (or LLM), generative AI (or GenAI), and GPT.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tech\u2019s<\/a> current pace of development, the impact on 2024\u2019s dictionaries could be even deeper.<\/p>\n<p>With the generative AI explosion still booming, perhaps artificial intelligence will simply invent the next word of the year.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/ai-is-transforming-the-english-dictionary\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AI has made another assault on the English language.
